I just watched this guys video, and he says a T5 SSD is not much faster than a fusion drive? I find that hard to believe is the guy wrong from all I have heard that he is.
I have just seen his big mistake he only used the USB3 port instead of using the USBC Thunderbolt port as the T5 comes with a USBC cable.
He must be the first person who says the Fusion drive is not to bad

Well nothing suspicious over here. Samsung T5 is a popular external ssd, but it doesn't matter how you connect it, because its' max speed is around 500-550 mb/s.
I bought 128gb SATA3 ssd into my dell xps in 2012, and speed of it was also 450-500 mb/s.
So yeah, that Samsung drive is not a speedy racer, but it is enough for normal use.

On the other hand, Fusion drive is equal to HDD+SSD. It is 128GB SSD in 2Tb Fusion Drive.
So if you access something from SSD side, then it is fast like T5, but if your thing on HDD side, then it is slower.

The 1tb fusion drive is garbage due to the small SSD. The 2 and 3tb versions perform very well with most use cases. Can be a good buy if you really need the space and don’t want the hassle of external drives. A lot of the people that dis fusion drives have never used one in normal workflows.

I agree on the 1TB Fusion drive with only 32gb SSD in 2017 and 2019 models.
I have a 6gb external drive. I did have a 1tb Fusion drivel n my Mac Mini that had 128 SSD it worked fine tell I got the flashing folder then got it replaced with an SSD.

(3.5GHzis Should I go for 3.8GHz 16 GB 2TB Fusion Hard Drive Radeon 580 or
(3.5GHz), 24GB, Radeon Pro 575, 256GB SSD the 16gb is enough for me. The iMac 3.5 modal is in Mint condition and complete with the original box It has barely been used - bought for freelance work and no longer required. the one with the SSD is 50 pounds more both from private buyers.

OP:

Use the free BlackMagic Speed Test (from the App Store) to measure the speed of your fusion drive and POST the results here.

A t5 (or just about any other USB3 SSD) will give you reads around 430MBps and writes in the 330MBps range (or higher).

So what is your answer to me Fisherman? Should i go for the one with the SSD with lower specs or the fusion drive with the hihgher speces?

Is it possible for the os fit on the flash side of the fusion drive? Then use external sdd for apps and files and the hdd as a backup?

I don,t think it would work as32gb is not enough for the os and the way a fusion drive works.Fishrrman will give you more info on that.

The fact is that with a Fusion Drive, all the space on it functions at the speed of SSD, so even though you'd have a 2TB HDD in there, you'd experience it as if it was a 2TB SSD, ie. running at around 450MBps. If it was me, I'd get the FD, as the SSD option only has 256GB storage space and that'd be the deal breaker - for me.

I have just seen this Fusion Drive v SSD
not much in it according to this guys video.
