Hi, simple question....
Which would be better performance a fusion drive or a standard HDD in the mac and a thunderbolt HDD for running games, apps and files like iPhoto Library!
If I didn't get a fusion drive, I can then afford to get the hi end 27" iMac instead of the entry level 27"iMac and add a thunderbolt drive later.

Try to stretch for both. You'll be glad in the end. The joy of booting from an ssd (fusion or otherwise) is hard to beat for instant gratification.

Well a HDD on ThunderBolt won't be any faster than an internal drive (likely a bit slower due to overhead).

Now if you're thinking of buying an external Thunderbolt SSD down the road and booting from it (using the internal HDD for data), then that is a different story.
