AFAIK the Fussion disk is pure software solution, so does any one know/heard sth about this?:

1. will it be released for odler imacs (2011 with SSD and HDD)
2. will it work with SSD/HDD that replaces superdrive
3. will it work with external HDD connected via FW or Thunderbolt?

What I would like to try - external SSD disk connected via thunderbolt - this would by system disk and internal hdd used primarily for data - and both of them managed by fussion.. is that possible? (I guess not as Apple is protecting its revenues:)

Great topic - where is the jury on this decision. Fusion for $250 or SSD for $300?

I really think this is going to be a hardware chip. If its not it'll use CPU cycles which isn't good.

according to arstechnica and anandtech it looks like its solved using software and logical volume management.. maybe some ideas from tiered enterprise storage.

Would be great if it was simply available in old macs and ssd upgraded macs.. I do however suspect that it will be like TRIM. Only for Macs with 100% Apple-hardware from this day on..

There's always hope for a hacky solution! :)
