Consumers want video+audio assistant, improved smarts and multi-user voice recognition. Don't think they care much about gimmicks like air gestures or Face ID.

How would Face ID, being a hardware biometric functionality be a ‘gimmick’? That’s a totally different feature, and you yourself don’t know what Apple has planned for Face ID, _if_ it is implemented into the HomePod.

What an utterly utterly utterly pointless idea, all you need is a smart speaker that actually works as a smart speaker with your voice. Not one with pointless Face ID and hand gestures!
Make the damn thing do the basics first, then pile on the gizmos after that will no doubt triple its price..

Couldn’t help it. Got myself a second HomePod for stereo sound. I’m really happy with them in a way that I’m not with other Apple products. It’s been strange listening to the same catalogue of music on this system coming from EarPods/AirPods.

At "countertop" level it needs Ass ID not Face ID especially in popular kitchen role with back turned. It'll be archaic if one has to stop what they're doing, turn around and look into it to trigger it. Makes you wonder if they do any sort of market/competitor research and not just throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks.

I’m not entirely sure how I feel about gestures having to control/manipulate the HomePod, also, but more than anything, I’m skeptical Face ID will be implemented into the HomePod. But gesture controls does seem ‘Apple-like’
Because, you know, Apple has to "re-invent controls" (God knows why but there you go...)

To be fair.... This is just a rumor.

Rather than Face ID, I'd be happy if they gave HomePod the ability to recognise different voices with the voice trigger, like how Hey Siri on iPhone triggers with your voice only. That way requests by different family members, or simply people who aren't you, wouldn't get put into your personal play history.

Perhaps you should contact Apple and set up a consulting agreement so you can share the tremendous amount of market research that went into your opinion?

Fast forward to Apple shutting down everyone's HomePod speakers because a bug allowed people to access the FaceID camera without permission...

What they have planned is a way to offload their overstock of FaceID modules on a product they are confident the target market is willing to overpay for.

In the past patent trolls just spammed everything that already existed but now being done "on the internet". Then it was "on a phone".

Now Apple is patenting everything "with FaceID".

Who says that you have to stand in front of it? When you’re talking to someone, do you have to carefully position yourself in front of them?

A HomePod with a high definition camera could identify the speaker anywhere in the room and interpret its facial expressions and other non verbal cues like nodding, shrugging, pointing, etc.

This technology already exists. It just hasn’t been implemented into a consumer product. If there’s a company that can create simple, intuitive, frictionless experiences out of very complex technology, it’s Apple.

HomePod is designed with speakers arranged in 360 degrees. It would need HD cameras in 360 degrees.

But then, if there's a company that can create complicated, restricted, expensive experiences out of very simple technology, it's Apple.

They are building a 'HomePod Home Hub'!

Think about it...
- Apple already has multitouch patents,
- this patent claim doesn't specify what type of display (it even says it might have pixels based on LED).
- phrasing might be purposefully vague to blindside competition... and journalists.

I bet this device will be like an iPad with better speakers that stays in one place... or like Google Home Hub... ;)

What about the built-in display? Will it be capable of more in the future?

All that brilliant tech, no Bluetooth? No aux in? Doesn’t work with anything but Apple music (unless you use airplay)

Cool idea, Tim - you can still shove it.
I returned it immediately, only works with ATV and Airplay compatible products, which are very minimal. I wanted to hook up my BR player and other devices, and no can do. This is the 1st Apple product that I am thoroughly disappointed and dont see any value.
