If the 2nd generation iPhone has half the capabilities people on here say it will, the starting price will be eleventy-billion dollars.

That's already a couple of big upgrades for no extra cost. You start adding in GPS and that's got to be a lot of dough spent on a single upgrade for something so relatively cheap.

Therefore, I'm still skeptical about GPS coming on 2nd generation phone.

Unless, they run both iPhone, the 1st Gen and 2nd Gen, the 1st a little less than now, the 2nd a bit more

WIFI and Google Maps, to me, is not a satisfactory solution. Real GPS is necessary. Too many places where you need to know where you are and how to get somewhere do not have WIFI and cell tower triangulation is not accurate enough. I agree that an integrated GPSr drains the battery too much (which is why I am happy with removable batteries on the Treo) and, therefore, I think we will see the GPSr - that receives real satellite data - as an external unit linked by BT. I just hope what we get has verbal directions so that you don't have to take your eyes off the road.

I think it will run on Google Maps from WiFi hotspot locations, GPS will drain the battery too much, they have already had to sort the 3G batter drain, they are not going to add another one!

Battery drain isn't an issue since most of the time you have it wired to an in-car charger. As for being on foot, you can always locate where you are using GPS then switch to Google Maps.

Oh, as a note, the N95 didn't sell 7 million in the UK, it was 7 million worldwide. Still impressive figures though.

i think a solution to the battery drainage is for it to be connected with google maps. when google maps app is running, so is the gps (option included to temp shut off gps)...

this would solve the battery issue. google map app will not run in the background. How often do you use google maps? Find location and turn off.

I said 1 million in UK in 7 months, which is for 60 million people, meaning about 5 million for 300 million people (USA population) which means its selling much faster than the iPhone, which sold only 2-4 million (many for export) in around 7 months in USA.

Here's what we know the next-gen phone will have: 3G. Everything else is a guess. I think it would be insanity to not add more storage, but who knows. So pretend like the new $399 iPhone will have 3G and 16GB of storage. That's already a couple of big upgrades for no extra cost. You start adding in GPS and that's got to be a lot of dough spent on a single upgrade for something so relatively cheap.

Therefore, I'm still skeptical about GPS coming on 2nd generation phone. Maybe they will make me look dumb because a lot of other smartphones have it. But there's a lot of stuff other smartphones don't have that the iPhone does (like it's a frickin' iPod). So don't get your hopes up on GPS after the big deal about Google Maps' "Find Me" feature. I don't think that was done for just 6 months of pizzaz. But what do I know? :)

One of the things that is supposedly being added in the big June software update is...wider Bluetooth compatibility. Considering that and the SDK, I would be gobsmacked if there wasn't a Bluetooth GPS kit available after the update. I agree that I don't expect Apple to be building it in to the iPhone. They'll need all the room they can get inside the casing for the 3G chip, better battery and more memory.

unless you have personal knowledge about how big or small every component will be, you are just speculating. do you personally know how big the 3g chip will be or any of the other stuff. i dont think so. So assuming that the phone will not have gps just because all the other components are too big just just a big speculation on your part without any foundation.

Ah so you did. I was one of those million people incidentally. :)
