Maybe it has a build-in inflatable bag, which would fill your palm to make it ergonomic.

Product name the iTick.

If the whole keyboard or trackpad was removable that would be great for docking a MacBook. Individual keys are so thin these days I don’t see how this could work in a product.

NOOOO!

Apple should stop messing about with something as crucial as a keyboard. We want keyboards to just work, be ergonomic, have ZERO issues, so we never have to think about them ever again.

No more Butterly Keyboard innovations.

Keep it simple.

This is the company CEO who bragged that doesn't even understand why anyone would ever buy a computer.

Then he took out an ad campaign to brag that he didn't even know what a computer was.

That's the Apple that thinks this is a good idea. Because if they had a clue what a computer was for they wouldn't even waste the paper to apply for this patent.

These are the Sculley days again. Apple should just stop selling tech and start selling soft drinks. Apple cola anyone?

Yeah, maybe.

HOWEVER, a smart corporation will patent as many of their ideas as they can, just to make sure people int he future can't copy that idea, no matter how hair brained and stupid they seem at the time. I'm sure if I had the time, I could pull out a bunch of old patents that seemed bizarre in the past, and yet are considered ground breaking today...

It's about making sure, if they decide to use it, they aren't sued by a patent troll for doing it. And, perhaps, so they can play troll too in the future...

I did FINALLY get the hang of that stub, but then they stopped using it.

Oh, but then...

I ran into one on a kiosk, and panicked... I was so shocked to see one, I avoided it as much as I could.

But, does anyone remember the MOUSE that had that stub? I tried one once, and it felt like driving a rear wheel steering car. Just no... (Like giving an RPN calculator to a classmate on a math test)

EDIT: Oh, just remembered that I got some kudos from my math prof at the time. He saw me give my RPN calculator to a classmate that showed up to a test without his calculator, and the look of horror on his face when he realized that he couldn't use it, and gave it back. I apparently had a 'look', and the prof saw it, and loved it. The next day, he mentioned it, but didn't mention my name. Called it 'fierce', and laughed. I looked at the classmate, and he glared back at me. No one ever asked me to borrow a calculator after that day. You are in university, you are in a test, and you KNEW about it ahead of time. Get your own damn calculator.:p:cool: And a mouse with a stub is just taunting people to try to use it. Yikes...

I’d buy a keyboard with one of these gadgets. Annnd…when I come back into the room after throwing the garbage out, find that my cat/s have flicked my mouse somewhere.

I have not read all the posts so apologise if this has been said.....
Why not a removable TrackPad that can double as a mouse, would help with the size issue and utilising a part of the MacBook that does the job of a mouse anyway!

As a pro user that requires precision editing on the go I can tell you that this is strictly a strategic patent. Apple will never implement this, but neither will anyone else now. I carry a Medium sized Wacom Intuos 2 (about the same size as a 15" Mac Book Pro) so some version of the Apple Pencil working in conjunction with the touchpad would be interesting.

Clearly this patent is just exhibiting the concept without actually showing the design for competition to start making product clones. If it ever comes out this is neither the form factor not the actual design, just the fundamental patent for concept. Let the copy cats keep guessing. Just a frint for something much different in design.

Future MacBook Could Feature Removable Key That Works as a Mouse
Or not. Not everything that has been patented will ever be a a finished product. An at least significant motivation behind patents is to keep others from doing something like this.

If anyone remembers, Apple also patented a mouse with an iPod style click wheel. I'm still waiting for that.
