Apple doesn't really budge on their the timing of their product announcements and it was last updated in April.

Sandy Bridge doesn't come out till next year so I wouldn't expect anything interesting until then.

With the MBP, they certainly to change their timings around. And AFAIK, they have never left a single MBP revision out for a whole year.

Just something to think about...

The HP Envy use to come with an external DVD Superdrive in the box. HP was able to make the Envy much thinner by removing the Optical Drive.

Guess what....the drive is back. They now have a slot loading drive similar to the ones Apple has.

Just food for thought.

Overlaying probable rejigging of inards without drive. I doubt battery will be like this due to inbalance in weight, but it just goes to show how much you can improve it by removing something that many people don't use.

I really don't see the optical going away soon either for most users. Sure, AAPL may want us to download more of our content from the cloud and iTunes, but at the same time they're only distributing Logic on a bunch of DVDs.

I am, however, hoping to see things such as quad-core processors, IPS displays, the option for an SSD card similar to that in the MBA, etc. in subsequent but, given AAPL's hardware tendencies and focus on turning Macs into super iToys, these predictions are probably too optimistic.

A MBP - Superdrive, does NOT equal a MacBook Air.
It's essentially saying.. i7=C2D

FWIW. I would like to see the option of a second HDD instead of the a superdrive. While i dont think Apple will rid thier line of Macbook Pros of DVD drives this next revision. I do think they are close.

All the signs are there. Online app store, online movies, TV, music.. Blockbuster going bust.. Cd stores..

Its only a matter of time, until we see everything online.

The one thing that I dont like, is this whole cloud computing thing..

Go troll elsewhere...100 threads here about i7 is barely better than an i5 and then 100 more about an i5 is barely better than an C2D. You trolls wont be happy until Apple does a complete custom build for everyone that goes as far as how hot they put solder on the connections.

I'm not saying get rid of it completely, maybe just make it an option. I know for me and many people I know, a secondary hard drive (or bigger battery/better specs) can go a lot further than a super drive

I want 16:9 displays with the following resolutions:
13" - 1600x900
15" - 1920x1080
17" - 2048x1152

which have more pixels than their 16:10 counterparts overall:
13" - 1440x900
15" - 1680x1050
17" - 1920x1200

I was disappointed when I saw the 13" MacBook Air was still using a 16:10 display. It's inconsistent with the 11.6", LED Cinema Displays and iMacs.

People already complain about being able to read the 1680x1050 15" display, I dont see how it can be made any bigger without killing a lot of the customer base unless they finally get a way to change resolution without destroying the display quality.

On my 27 ACD I just make the font bigger for browsing

If you want a MBP without the superdrive YOUR IN LUCK, APPLE ALREADY MAKES IT...ITS CALLED THE MacBook Air!!!!
This type of comment really shows what a technological idiot some people can be. Perhaps 300gb storage vs 64gb storage enlightens you a bit? Two more gigs memory? 1Ghz faster processor?

The point of removing the optical drive, as many people have said, would not necessarily be to slim the computer (The entire purpose of the air, a slim computer) but to replace it with something people use on a DAILY basis instead of something people use on a MONTHLY basis.

Go buy an external hard drive.

And herein lies the problem. Trying to figure out whats going to happen if Apple does remove the optical drive.

yeah your right.... apple always have been never given us the things we want but they mannage to enchant us with other stuff

maybe it comes instead the optical drive with a proyector hahaha

Go buy an external hard drive.

This is the dilemma.
You (and some others) think Apple should stick with a super drive and if people need more space buy a external hard drive.
Some other people including myself would prefer 2 hard drives and if needing the use of dead disc media buy an external DVD player/writer.

Try and step back and look at it from someone else's point of view.

If you are using over 1tb you need to buy a desktop because thats more than enough on a laptop

That's only your opinion. You have no idea what requirements others may have for storage on a notebook.

exactly as above, I am pushing the 500gb I have right now, aswell as having much media stored on an external 2TB drive. I also use my pro as a desktop replacement with the ACD.
Also, this extra space could be used to cater for better specs/battery etc

The only thing holding me back from buying a new 13" MBA is this feeling, that the next generation of MBPs will come along in 6-9 months and blow everything out of the water, including the MBAs, just like it happened back in october 2008.

Relaxing the size and weight constraints of the MBA just a little bit, along with a fresh MBP chassis-design, unburdened by drive bays, has alot of potential.

The 13" could be thinner and lighter than the current model, while having 10 hours battery, backlit keyboard, discrete GFX and for the first time an i5 CPU.

What do you expect of the next generation of MBP's?

I think no optical drive is a given, at least for the sub 17" models.
I'm more curious if they will ditch the drive bay like they did with the MBA's.

I think the next generation of MBPs will have IPS displays with black frames, built-in SSD, very long battery life and strong specs. Imagine a 13" MBP without a drive bay and optical drive could have room for more battery and discrete graphics card, and probably even be thinner than the current crop.

IPS would be way-cool.

Currently, I know of no laptop that uses IPS panels. While the 17" mid-09 MBP has a great screen, it's still TN and many of TN's disadvantages are still prevalent. :(

Keeping 1920x1200 would be a real plus as well, for designers and others needing the screen space...

I'll be the first to say it

i5 as a standard in the 13 inch. Hell i'll settle for an i3. there's no excuse to charge $1200 for a laptop, call it a 'pro' but still use core 2 duo. Core 2 Duo was out dated when I got it in my 2008 macbook.

What I really want to see is an upgrade to the 400 series of gpu's, 430m for 13 inch, and probably 460m for 15 and above.

As for the ongoing argument of getting rid of the optical drive. Maybe you don't use dvd's but I can think of thousands of mac users that still do. I personally use my macbook for watching dvd's almost every night in bed. Everyone wants to talk up download, but you have to remember downloading means using up hard drive space. And ontop of that downloading means waiting. Maybe you guys have a decent isp, but I live in the country, best I see is 2meg, it's a nightmare especially considering I know the difference between 2mb and say 16mb...

So downloading a movie off itunes means spending 3 hours at min downloading it, plus a very pissed off household when I use up all the bandwidth. Also, idk about you guys but I still do buy blu-rays, and usually when I do I look for the dvd combo pack or digital copy, and both of these still use discs to get the media from box to my macbook.

Agree with most of what you're saying, but the 'Pro' label is just for marketing on all of Apple's consumer products. Doesn't matter what the computer is called vs. what's in it. And merely owning a MBP doesn't imply that one does "professional work" on it either.

Apple has a TDP limit you know... Of the 4xx series you should expect to see a 425M in the 15" and 17" as that is the same TDP as the previous GPU's they've used and a 415M for the 13" would be the same TDP as the 320M. That's all we can base this on now until we see what Apple does with the new optical drive space(assuming they remove it).
