With the new tighter resolution of the 17" and 15" Macbook Pros (one-third or so more pixels), I wonder whether Apple will one day do the same to the 24" display they have going on. Instead of 1920x1200, we might see something like 2240x1400. Am I crazy to think this?

I ask because I'm mulling over the 15" MBP with 256MB RAM or the much more expensive one with 512MB RAM. According to Barefeats, the difference means nothing up to 1920x1200, but on larger displays it is crucial.

I have a crappy Asus 24" monitor now, so the 256MB model should suit me fine, but if there were a 2240x1400 one released, I would pounce on it right away...then regret not having spent the extra $400 for the 512MB VRAM model.

So. Am I overthinking this?

[Note: I don't care about processor speed, so i5 vs i7 is a wash; in fact, I prefer to keep the machine cooler, and I assume that i5 runs cooler than i7.]

1) Yes, you are over thinking this

2) Apple is at the mercy of the LCD manufacturers just like all the other display makers.

3) There is not a high-rez 24" panel available now, and the panel manufacturers do not have much incentive to make one. However, the 27" LCD panel (like in the iMac or Dell U2711) is 2560x1440. So if you ever aspire to drive one of those the 512MB MBP may be a good investment.

4) Apple is rumored to have such a 27" display ready for release in June.
