I like the G3s for beginners. I'm getting my sister and a good friend snow G3 iBooks to run on Panther. When they "get the knack" of OSX, we'll hunt around for a new 'puter with Leopard in a few years.

I personally have had no problems with G3 iBooks, thank you Lord God.
 
It will only run 802.11b speeds with the 802.11b card - the rest of your network will be unaffected and run at the 802.11g speeds (if you have other, 802.11g equipped computers).

I think pretty much any of the iBooks you're considering will do the job OK - but the newer the Mac the faster it will run, and the more it will cost.
