I've got a G4 quicksilver. A few weeks ago it was making lots of terrible noise, so I opened it up, realized it was the CPU fan, and I unplugged the sucker. Since then I've been running a temperature monitor, but on the G4 the only real temperature monitor is on the hard drive. Still, it seems like everything is working OK. I've ripped a few DVDs, watched some AVIs, etc. I'd kind of like to unplug the other fans too and just have a totally silent machine.

Does anybody have any experience with doing this? I was also wondering if anybody has tried quieter alternatives, like peltier or thomson junctions. Eventually I'd like to use this computer as a media center, so getting it quiet would be a nice goal.

You options are:
1) Larger, quieter fans
2) Water cooling
3) Somehow modding the logic board so you have an external CPU that you can put elsewhere and have all the loud cooling you want.
