Hi.
I recently bought a G4 PowerMac MDD FW800.
It came with an ATI Radeon 9000 card and an iX3D Ultimate Rez card.
I have a DVI - HDMI adapter plugged into the ATI card.
When I first booted it up, the screen (Samsung C24F 24" Display) showed static before the OS X loading screen. So I would never see the Apple logo.
I wiped the drive and reinstalled OS X 10.4, which appeared to fix the static issue. As I plan to replace the HDD with solid-state storage, I had a go at installing the MacOS9Lives version of Mac OS 9. That worked ok.
I turned off the computer and removed the iX3D card, as I would never use it. When I booted it up, I just got static, and nothing seemed to happen. I tried switching to a DVI - VGA adapter, but that gave a blank screen.
I've reset the PRAM (CMD-OPT-P-R) for three sets of chimes. I've tried disconnecting everything, removing the PRAM battery, and pressing the PMU button, but this hasn't changed.
I reinstalled the iX3D card, and I can get into Open Firmware, but the keyboard stopped responding after a couple of key presses.
I can get to the boot selection screen and start to boot from an OS X DVD, but it appears to hang.
All the output from the iX3D card is at a very low resolution. I'm not sure what resolution it is precisely.
I realise that installing something like MacOS9Lives could be risky.
The motherboard appears in good shape, with no blown or leaking caps. The PRAM battery also appears in good condition and shows 3.6 volts on a multimeter.
Is there anything else I can try? Does it sound like the ATI card is fried (I don't have another computer to test it on or another card to test in this machine)?
