I just want to try something else, even if it means giving up some power and some money...
When I bought my XP desktop (which now does nothing but collect dust while I use my Powerbook :) ), the COMPUSA salesperson told me to stay clear of eMachines even though they are way cheaper than HP, Compaq, Dell, etc with similar specs. I'm not sure why though... I hope your friend has a good experience with his. Hope you enjoy your G5. I wish I had the $$ for one!

But not much faster.

Frankly I'm not suprised at the results.

Apple/Motorola has let the speed of the platform degenerate to such a degree that it was a litteral "Slap in the face" fo them to announce a G5 1.6 STARTING at $2k. That's ludicrous.

Powermacs need to be Dual throughout the whole lineup. Period. Think about it. The G5 is only 1.8Ghz faster than the G4 but it has twice the pipeline stages and doesn't dispatch a high enough amount of intructions(5 vs 3) to make a huge difference.

I love Apple but for chrissakes they are the greediest company I've ever seen. They survive because of a loyal fanbase and quite honestly because Microsoft is damn near their opposite.

They need to pull their head out their azzes and start shipping Powermacs that live up to the name. I wouldn't drop a dime on a non Dual G5 system.

Agreed. Looks like we'll have to wait until the rev B G5s come out... I'm sure they'll all be dual CPUs... they're probably robbing people with the single processor systems because:

A) They can
B) They're waiting for processor yields to get better.

So, I guess MW SF will be the time I can actually get a G5.

Well, you never know man... I was waiting for PB update since freaking february and what did it lead to? Nothing!
If you are just goign to wait for updates all the time, you woun't ever buy anything. Cuz when next revision comes out, pcs again will be a step ahead and you will complain again that apple didnt' do something right. I mean ok, lets say next revision will be:
Single 1.6 - $1799.99
DUAL 1.8 - $2399.99
DUAL 2.0 - $2799.99
DUAL 2.2 - $3199.99

But pcs will have 3.6Ghz P4 that are 50% less. And that 64 bit athlon may come in the game too...
I say, go for it...

he has a point, the one who asked why the whole line up isn't all dual. It is a good question, b/c the previous, "top of the line" PowerMacs were duals (i'm not knowledgeable in the G4 Cpus...but i'm guessing they maxed around 1.4ghz?)

The cost of an additional cpu in the lower end models probably isn't that much--but this is Apple we're talking about (not exactly going for $799 a pop).

With the paper launches of the 2700/2800+ history from 2002, i'm pretty sure AMD will come out of the gates with the 64. AGAIN, it is NEW TECHNOLOGY. If you want the best...your gonna have to pay for it.

In another year, the dual 2.0's G5's could very well be "mid-level". So those who want the best will buy it, the more patient ones will get the rev B.

Does softwares have to be optimized for G5 in order to have decent performance? I thought G5 was 32bit software compatible?

"To be optimized for the G5" doesn't necessarily mean 64 bits. The G5 is a different processor than the G4 (similar ofcourse, it is a PPC with Altivec). The fact that VPC 6 won't run on it proves this point. Also the Photoshop 7 plugin for G5 doesn't make Photoshop 64 bits.
So to be optimized for the G5 could also mean letting an app use some other code which only the G5 can use, which could make it run more efficently.
