I managed to get my G5 working. I had thought it was a 64-bit CPU. How do I tell, and do I need a different version of Leopard than the retail upgrade disc I have now?

All G5's are 64-bit CPUs. When you install the OS, it automatically installs everything needed for that system. You don't have to change anything at all!

I was under the impression that the G5s had java 6 on them in Leopard.
