I'm not calling anyone a brat, it's just I can picture a bratty person who always has to have his/her own way getting pissed at this without any sort of just reason. The reality of the situation is that *yes*, they are shipping, and *yes* you will have to wait until you can get your hands on one. It's just called life. And I agree, I don't care either way since I am in need of a PowerBook, not a PowerMac, but, if they were to put on the page "PowerBook updates!" I would not be pissed to go to the Apple Store and see that I have to wait to actually buy one, it's just common sense that when you order something to be built, you have to wait for the order to be processed, wait for it to be built/shipped to Apple, wait for them to ship it out, and wait for the kind FedEx guy to hand it to me. It's just how the world works and you have to just learn that a little patience can be a vast virtue in life.

Well, I think you still didn't understand my concern. Did I say people don't have to wait in line? All said that was a marketing stunt which is quite annoying. Putting a remark on the bottom clearing things up, isn't too much effort.

You can make any policy you want. This is just what people would expect.
I think that you're right that policies (like what "Now Shipping" means) do have to take into account what the target audience expects. I'm just not certain that we (i.e., Macrumors regulars) are the average audience.

The worst offender -- from which my roommate and I got (and still get) an enormous laugh -- was Burger King. They were running a contest where you peeled two paper squares off of cups to see if either had won you something. The TV commercial included the line -- and I kid you not -- the following:

"With the chances of winning one in three, the odds are in your favor!"

Clearly, they meant that with 1/3 probability, playing twice per cup suggested that you'd likely get something. But the actual copy was so blatently and demonstrably false, that I was stunned into hyterical laughter.

I'm guessing the analagous Apple add would be "With the G5 now shipping, you only have to have ordered six months ago to get one!"

In the end, I think that we (Apple fans, that is) might be Apple's toughest critics.

Mr Powerbook G5, you never admit anything do you?
You pick one side and no matter what develops you won't agree even to a smallest degree with an opposing side?

I stay corrected that ad is MISLEADING and is not a good example of false advertising.

People don't read press releases. I go to apple.com and see big ass add that states G5 are shipping.... basically come ang get em.
But later you get little font 8 remark that is actually shipping in 1.5 months...
When they say shipping now, that means you can order it now and get it shipped within 2 days.
For example www.gamestop.com they put "back order" on titles that they can't ship within 48 hours. And switch it back to "shipping" when they get games in stock. The back order only applies to people who didn't preorder. Preorders get the item as promised. SO no matter what you say, this ad on apples page is nothing more than cheap marketing of the product that they really don't even have in stock for majority of people.
It has little to do with disneyworld rides as they work on different principles.

I hit gamespot, clicked on Madden 04 (which is labeled on the front page as shipping now), then selected Gamecube, and only when I got to the Gamecube version order screen did it tell me it was on back order. A$$holes. I had to get 3 pages into the site before they told me the availibility of the game. That should be on the frong page. ;)

EDIT: Madden 04 for the GC seems to randomly skip between "in stock" and "back order" when I hit refresh. I guess they're not sure if they have enough or not. ;)

Maybe they have a live update system -- each time a copy rolls off the assembly line in China, it updates to "in stock"; when that copy is packed and addressed to the next back-ordered recipient, it updates to "back order".... :D

I'm not swure how its "False Advertising" when it is TRUE... but yeh... I'm definately trying to stop myself from ordering one. I'd never even noticed that the $2000 model was a 1.6GHz.. I'd never even looked at it. UGh.. I want one so bad...

Dude, I think you're a bit touchy... you started this thread, I'm just responding. :)

<edit>
Fair enough though, I've been known to fly off the handle when I see something that... wait, what does the thing say about "personal unsults"...? I'll do my best from now on, sorry. :D That splash page really makes consumers want to buy one though...

LOL, yep you are right. I just checked that Madden thing for GC.
Maybe they just put a random message in there or something.
One customer gets it, seconds doesn't get ****.
HEHE... OR maybe it's cuz it's GC version lol
