G5 machines can be troublesome. I've owned three, and the 2.7GHz LCS model was the most unreliable, of course! This thread is for Power Mac G5s, hopefully when I know a bit more about iMacs and Xserves those can be here too!

This is a wiki, so you guys are free to add your knowledge!

G5 Won't Turn on
  • Reset SMU
  • Reset PMU
  • Reseat Processors

G5 Turns on, Beeps
  • 3 beeps, fans like a jet? Re-seat RAM
  • 3 beeps, fans like a jet after Re-seating RAM? Check for problems with the installed DIMMS
  • 3 beeps, fans like a jet and all DIMMs OK? Your memory controller is more then likely bad. Bake/Replace Logic Board
  • 2 low tone beeps. Reset PRAM

No Video Output
  • Remove and re-seat graphics card
  • Turn on, sit for 5 minutes, then hard shut down.
  • Find a spare graphics card and try

Loud Fans
  • Remove and clean them of dust
  • Check Thermal Sensor by AirPort card
  • Run ASD Thermal Calibration 2.5.8 (2003-Early05) 2.6.3 (Late05)

Red Lights on CPU Cards
Happened to me between two machines, each 2.7GHz
  • Reseat Heatsink/LCS
  • Reset PMU
  • Let machine sit and cool, if a LCS add more coolant.
