My G5's Superdrive (early 2004 model) clunks away unable to mount at times. Other times it will burn a DVD only later to not recognise it though the DVD will have burnt and be OK on another Mac. It has been doing this on and off a while so I'm looking to replace it. The question is what with? I can't find any good press on a non Apple installed Combo CD/DVD and wonder if any others have been through this and found a solution. If need be I will replace it with a DVD drive - but would like to retain the combo capability if possible. The thought of running third party firmware for the new drive is not particularly inviting but any positive experiences or suggestions greatfully accepted.

?? what makes you think you have to give up the combo capability?

You can buy DVD+/-RW drives (which also read and write CDs) for $30 at any computer store.

Go to www.xlr8yourmac.com and look if the drive compatibility database for information on compatibility of specific brands and models. The Pioneer drives are usually the most compatible, but with a software patch, most brands of DVDRW are usable.

I would highly recommend the 31.99 Super Drive from www.macsales.com!

Here is the link to the 20x Super Drive:

I installed one of these into my dads Power Mac G4 and that was about 1 year ago. I have not heard any complaints from him either about it. Also the great thing about MacSales is that they have installation videos that can walk you step by step on how to install the Power Mac G5.

    I second that. A 20X burner for $32! Amazing. And it's no knock-off brand either. Man, I can't believe I paid $450 for a 4x back in 1998!

thanks. I will see what we have here in Oz. Probably not as cheap as you guys can get drives.

One question> Did you have to run Patchburn or did you just plug the drive in and it works?

i am looking into this for buying now and as far as i know, they will fully work but in system profiler they will say not supported (which mean it's not apple branded. who cares?)

patchburn does not work in leopard.
