While 15 million doesn't seem to me like a lot either, I won't begrudge the government anything until I know what the other 7 countries contributed...
Anyone know?

Probably in the same portion as they did for the Iraq II coalition.

If you could provide a link to this data, I would be interested in reading more on it.

im afraid i dont have a link to support that but i will search for one, so watch this space. that piece of information came from my parents who do HIV/AIDS prevention research, and run the ZiCHIRe (Zimbabwe Community Health Intervention Research) project, you can google ZiCHIRe if you would like more information

Thanks. Will look at your parents project site.

Your reference is the first one of its type. What I do know that it has existed in primates for an unknown amount of time. I have seen reports that make human transition at about 50 years ago.

The shame of the matter is that even the research community is divided on the issue.

thats essentially what i was saying although i realize i didnt make it very clear. it has existed in primates for millions of years, maybe not always as AIDS as we know it. it is a retrovirus which is one of the most primitive life forms on earth and the fact that it still exists means that it is exceptionally good at adapting to hostile environments.

Where's the constitutional authority for this?! Its not the federal governments job to research or find cure's for disease.

It's not the federal government's job to fight a war on drugs, levy an income tax, fund entitlements to citizens, fund corporate welfare, or wage offensive wars in Third World countries, either. Welcome to the United States of America.

Its funny, because the entire G8 "meeting" or whatever you call it, including all the expensive dinners and social functions of various sorts, probably cost a nice portion of $15 million.

That's what the government does: Spends $5 million dollars on research and event financing to "discover" that they need to find a vaccine for AIDS. Wow, that's great, and they'll even invest a whole $15 million to the cause. Sweet!! Government finances at work!

They need to spend money to provide a place for researchers to find a vaccine for AIDS? Aren't there people that do research already? Maybe they should use this funding to back up the researchers who have already made major progress in the field to further their attempts, since they've jumped the Government gun and already started on the research anyway. Or they could find a way to better share the research results and data collected, not start another government funded research group that will eventually receive little to no funding in several years because of cut-backs.

Politics aside I fail to see why everyone is so mad about this. The $15 million is to get the ball rolling on the administrative/logistics side. It's not geared toward funding research. And yes there are already people researching AIDS (duh) but that's not what this project is about. How many of you actually read the article? It's about better coordination and standardising<sp?> practices between existing labs and lessening international "red tape." So instead of a bunch of scientists in a bunch of countries working independent of each other the goal is to have a bunch of scientists in bunch of countries working as a global team and being able to easily share data and findings w/each other.

The negativity and knee-jerk "Bush reactions" in this thread are amazing.

The government is to "provide for the common defence"... I believe it's not a big stretch to say that common defence includes defence against a virus, bacteria, bark beatle, and other health and safety problems.. It falls under the same authority that grants the Feds the right to have federal police or a federal army. Be they policing people or combating infectious agents.. The Centers for Disease Control is fully federal funded. They are operating under the same authority and mandate.

I think donating tax money to Planned Parenthood is far more questionable than to found a scientific agency for eliminating a particular problematic virus. I'd also note that research into the various strains of HIV has brought several life-saving advances to other areas of medical research, particularly in the areas of retroviruses and cancer.

I quite agree with you :) Don't know that I have a problem with Planned Parenthood per se. Did you get my pvt msg?
