I only use Best Buy because they are the (Sadly) the best electronics store :(. There is Wal-Mart, but I'd rather go to an electronics store over Wal-Mart any day.

But I'm with the people who can never get help. I know I'm only 14, but it would be nice to have at least one salesperson to just be available. And I would rather get irritated then be left alone forever. My mother sends me to get something while she's in line, and I look for someone and they are all hidden or helping someone already. I have to stop someone that is bolting to get something and ask them. It's aggravating .

I live over by the Westhills location, but this time I happened to be in the north East by Peter Lougheed Hospital. I usually end up at the Deerfoot Meadows location as a rule, though. Something about the Westhills store I don't like. Can't explain it tho...

I feel the same way... it's like 3/5s the size of a normal Best Buy, it's just weird :/

Bestbuy has really lost a lot of ground in the last few years. They have no niche anymore. They are no online threat, and now that places like Walmart have the same electronics at a cheaper price... I don't know how they will survive.

I agree with what ohter people are saying Best Buy isnt 100 percent perfect but yeah places like Walmart is worse.

all sales reps are pretty much stupid

I'm a sales rep now... :D

Yes, our store is specialized and is doing very, very well. Other stores I know of along the same lines are doing the same.

People are tired of these "big box" stores that sell everything from blenders to High-Def TV's...

People who know what they want just go online, or buy from a specialized store.

I've always bought my computers online (HP, Apple) or at a store such as Microcenter (no Microwaves there).

Everyone I know that purchased a high-tech ticket item from a Big Box store has been disappointed...

I hate going into Best Buy. The one nearest me is kind of odd though. If you look through several sections you'll get the same person, usually, asking you if you need any help each time you cross a section border. It's like they stalk you. BUT if you actually do have a question, they'll get someone else.
And, like everyone has noticed, you don't need to know much to know more than the floor sales person.

OP's story is weird but completely believable. Staples does similar things.

I love going to Best Buy so I can spend $129 on a 5' HDMI cable or anything made by Monster Cable. OK, I really don't do that...and I don't understand why people do.

Same reason people buy candy in the checkout aisles at the supermarket...it's there in front of you, you 'need' it so it's easy to obtain. Most people shopping at BB for electronics don't know about the online sources for HDMI cabling anyway. They know they need one for their BluRay player to watch discs on the HDTV, so they buy one...the 'BEST' one they can find too, to have the sharpest picture. ;)

Sure, there are much cheaper places, but when you are taking your HDTV and BluRay player home today, you want to be able to pick a cable up at the same place. You are paying a premium for that convenience.

I remember when I went into the Mall of America Best Buy to get a game for my brother's birthday and I was just curious to see what an HDMI cable for my PS3 would cost. I asked the guy where they were and he pointed it out, and they had sections where they showed the different qualities of cables, "good", "better", "best". "good" started at $30 for a 5 foot cable, "better" started at $60 for a 5 foot cable, and "best" started at $100 for a 5 foot cable. The guy told me that I should buy "best" because it has a lifetime warranty and they are practically indestructible. I asked them how they differ and he didn't know, he just gave me a BS answer like "they are made from different qualities of plastic". I picked up "good" and the guy seemed disappointed and gave me a "alright man, you might be a little disappointed but your choice."

I looked online to see what a 5 foot cable would cost on one of their computers and I found a 15 foot cable for something like 20 dolllars. I went to go put the cable back on the shelf and the guy asked me why and I said,"online the cords are a lot cheaper" and he just kind of ignored me. haha.

I like Best Buy if you know what you want, and you did your research before hand (or in store like I did). :D

Believe it or not here in the UK we're welcoming Best Buy with open arms. You may complain, but compared to the totally atrocious service we've had from Currys/PC World over the years what you're describing is a serious step up. Most Brits who know about the new competitor hope Best Buy wipe the floor with PCW.

Needless to say, I was pissed and decided to forgo the $150 in gift cards and just purchase the TV from Amazon. Turns out Amazon had the TV listed for $70 less than Best Buy with no tax and $3.99 overnight shipping.

I’ll never purchase another item at Best Buy again if I can help it.

So how did it go with Amazon?--let us know when it shows up and if it makes it in one piece and if you are happy with it.

Wow, that guy was nuts if he thought anyone would fall for that logic. *smirk* I mean, (lifetime warranty) how many decades do cables need to last anyway? And who wants an indestructible cable? What's gonna happen, a bunch of apes chewing on the damn thing?

There are real differences in cable quality. But since these are digital signals they are carrying, and not analog pulses, you need to be an audiophile to notice those subtle variations.

Glad you broke his heart and opted for the "cheap" one.
