Just consider for a moment out poor comrades in the Aussie outback, running on generators, no TV and the only thing they can really do when it's a warm summer's day is to sit back and watch the thermometer hit 60°C (140°F).

And that's in the spots where there are people and thermometers. Out in the middle of nowhere there are reports of temps above 65°C (150°F).

No force on Earth would make me move out there.

Fun Fact:

The town of Marble Bar (hottest town in Australia) in Western Australia, in 1924 experienced 161 consecutive days where the temperature never fell below 37.8°C (100°F). That's "never fell below 100°F" not "a maximum of 100°F" - the town was above 100°F for 24 hours a day for 161 consecutive days. Now that's crazy.

The temperature has never fallen below 0°C ever in Marble Bar.

That had to suck! I could not imagine putting up with 100 °F+ temperature for that long!

The UK has been pretty hot (by UK standards at least) in the last week or two.

I haven't got air-con, but it doesn't bother me that much, despite being acclimatised to the cooler and wetter weather etc.

And all the wimps who are going buying A/C units from Homebase or Argos or whatever, are now putting HIGH demand and stress on the power grid and could bring it down. :) Cool dudes! Just get a desk fan and open the windows!

I actually got cold today!!! In London, despite the heat, I was on my first day's work experience at AMY.BBDO and the A/C was set to 15?C!!! It was a little chilly to say the least but it was still better than being excessively hot. The nights are unbearable without it though.

no AC here either.. it was 94 yesterday in teh house, and today its 85 in the house

Fans are just as effective if placed in the right spots.

Only if it's dry.

When it's humid all they do is blow more humid air onto you and your sweat can't evaporate. Air cons remove the moisture from the air and thus your sweat is more likely to evaporate.

Trust me, when it's 38°C and 90% humidity, fans do bugger all.

True, fans kinda lose their ability to keep you cool when the humidity gets really high.

What's up with the weather service? They said 34C for today but it's already 41C. Thats with 90% humidity. Am melting.

I would have stayed home if they said the truth. I got out for 1 hour to take care some things and i almost fainted.

AC's are working at the max and the last power bill was £250 ($500). Am expecting this one to be higher. And summers to come will be even hotter since all those AC's drive the global temp up! Time to look for another planet, this one's done. :(

Dont want to hijack this thread, but has anyone had any experience with those outdoors AC's that spray cold mist? I've seen a few in cafes and they're great. Are they expensive to buy/operate?

I have seen something like that at Hershey Park here in Pennsylvania- they have these "misters" that spray out cold mist in certain areas of the park on hot days. :)

i'd just deal with it, or have a think about the convection where you live, my house tends to be a good 5 degrees cooler than outside and i have no active cooling just because i close/open windows and close/open doors when it makes sense to.
