$579

That's pretty damn aggressive

Check out this article and they talk about it
forbes article

The ToS they refer to is here
Terms of Service

Here is the specific part
5. PRIZE DETAILS:
First Prizes: 48 First Prizes will be awarded, each consisting of a Samsung Galaxy S® 4 mobile device. Approximate Retail Value ("ARV"): $579.

So that should make it a hell of a lot more attractive to anyone buying at full retail.

I knew something had to give if they were coming out with the Note 8 which is supposed to compete with the iPad mini (at $329) but also comes with a cellular radio. If that was priced around $349 it would be hard to justify a $649 or $699 price on the S4.

Does this change your view on the phone?

I'm personally still waiting for Motorola X and Note 3 to see what's out there this year, but the S4 just jumped out ahead of the competitors in my view.

I love aggressive pricing. Good for the manufacturers, because it gets more of their product moving, and it's GREAT for the consumer, well, for obvious reasons :)

That price will make a lot of people who were on the fence, upgrade. I wasn't even considering it b.c I was expecting $700+ for contract free

Will that be the final price in the US, though? I mean, if I bought it, say unlocked from Tmobile since they no longer do contracts?

Or if I bought it unlocked from online, will the retailers offer it that close?

Won't there be mark ups?

I would think that will be the price from t-moble/att/verizon/sprint contract free. Unlocked online always is more expensive.

$579 unlocked in the U.S. is a very good price. I was expecting $649, which is the retail off contract price from AT&T on the Note 2, and at WorstBuy it's like $700+. But is this officially official from Samsung and U.S. carriers yet ?

So if we want to use on Straight Talk, just go into AT&T or T-Mobile next month, and they will sell me the brand new Galaxy S4 for $579 ? If true, very tempting. But will wait until the phone is rooted with CM10.1 ROM's.

I was on the fence whether I'd buy the S4 since I've already got the S3, but if this price is correct, then that seals the deal.

I'm getting it. ;)

Isn't that a price increase over the GS3? Pretty sure it was selling full retail for $549.

But will wait for reviews first. Really curious on real world battery life with the U.S. versions.

I would guess with the 2600mAh battery life should be really good, but is it a little better than the S3 battery life, or like super better near Note 2 battery life ?

Correct. I got my S3 for $549 from Best Buy (they price matched AT&T, as they jack the price up to $649 because they're greedy).

I'm going to do the same. I'll give it a couple of months (probably until June or so) and let the reviews come in and let the stock replenish. If the S4 is anything like the S3 when it comes to popularity, it'll be hard to get your hands on one for the first few weeks after release. This will give me time to read some real world reviews and make an informed decision.

While I don't think battery life will be anything like the Note 2, I do think it will be the same or a little better than the S3 (which has been fantastic for me...usually 4.5-5 hours of screen-on time). You have to remember, even though the S4 has a bigger battery, it's also got a bigger and better screen, so this may draw a bit more juice.

I found the s3 very well priced compared to other phones. Id expect the same and If you were here last year the s3 was rubbished even more so i expect this to be a huge success.

That will be a big deal! $579 is a great price point for the S4. Even better than the HTC One developer's edition at $650.

When it comes to smartphones, price is not a factor in my decision. Functionality & features are of far greater importance.

It's an essential tool both for work & personal, therefore I'll spend whatever's required to buy what's best for me.

Does anyone know if this app works well with the S3?

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=song.y.j.mygesture&hl=en

With that price point, I'm more inclined to switch from my iPhone to the S4 (I still have weeks before my 30 day refund window is up with the iPhone). It's more affordable, and more future proof, but I'm sort of enjoying gesture base controls now on my jailbroken iPh5.

couldn't you just use something like nova launcher to get gestures?

Is the "G" icon constantly on the screen?

Can you? I don't know. That'd be spectacular.

Basically, I want to mimic the jailbreak app Zephyr. It allows you to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to go back home.

Does Nova do that?

Yes. Nova can set a ton of gestures to do different things. I use to have it so a swipe up would launch the camera, double tap would launch nova settings, etc.

nova can do that and much more, you can assign 9 different gestures afaik.

draw my gesture- in default the green icon is always there, you can move it wherever. you can put it in the notification bar, change the size of the icon etc.
