Samsung will add a facial recognition capability to its upcoming Galaxy S8 because of doubts about the speed and reliability of iris scanning alone, according to a report yesterday in the Korea Economic Daily.

The news comes amid rumors last month that Apple's "iPhone 8" will feature a "revolutionary" front-facing camera system with the potential to combine the advantages of both facial and iris recognition.

Due to some limits of iris scanning such as speed and accuracy, we have decided to add facial recognition to the Galaxy S8," a Samsung official was quoted as saying. "With a face scanner, it will take less than 0.01 seconds to unlock the phone."
Citing a second Samsung official, the report said the mobile business division had completed the software side of the technology and is currently testing the facial recognition in prototypes. The S8, which is expected to be the biggest to rival to the upcoming OLED iPhone, will launch on March 29.

Apple's ability to combine the technologies in a single camera system may be achievable thanks to built-in transmitting and receiving infrared modules, backed by software algorithms made by PrimseSense, which Apple acquired in 2013.

Apple is expected to include the camera system in a radically redesigned, minimal-bezel handset with an OLED display that includes built-in fingerprint recognition. The so-called "Tenth Anniversary Edition" model is expected to launch in the fall alongside two, more typical "S" cycle edition phones that will supersede the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

Is it really necessary for phones to be unlocked in 0.01 seconds?

Makes sense to me.... 4 ways to unlock the phone, giving options to the user.

1) Iris scanner would be great for more secure things e.g. banking/private folder etc

2) Facial recognition would be good for daylight, driving, gloves

3) PIN/Pattern as per usual

4) Fingerprint on the back when taking it out of pocket etc

Didn't some other android phones have this that were defeated by pictures?

My Nexus tablet or what ever it was called that Google released in 2011 I think had this feature. You had to blink though. Not sure how easy it was to defeat, but I'm not sure why this is a "feature" of the S8.

It works very nicely on my Surface Pro 4 and so is definitely a nice addition, especially if it is quicker.

It's like having double tap to wake & sleep on the LG G4 / G5. Such a simple gesture but is brilliant. I wish my 6S had it, if only to make it sleep.

Question: What happens if you
- lose/gain weight
- do makeup
- get older like wrinkles
- accident that affect your face
Etc
The iris never changes

Facial recognition only measures deep structural elements of one's face-- distance between eyes, size/shape of nose, etc... Weight gain/loss, makeup, or aging arent likely to affect it at all. And if something like a car accident were to happen, you will have the passcode (or perhaps Touch ID) option to access your device and reset the feature. There will always be a way to access your device without showing your face. It's just an obvious necessity.

So when a thief bonks you over the head with a lead pipe, they can grab your phone and conveniently unlock it in 0.01 seconds. Watch your backs, future S8 owners.

Ahh yes, how easy it will be for a thief to unlock your phone with his own fac .....eeeehhh, hang on. Wait, I need something else, that makes a tad sense, in order to smear excrement on Samsung. Hhhhhhmmmmm..... darn it, this will be a long wait .....while everyone is waiting, here's a video on Apple's security, which we of course all know is way better than Samsungs and every one elses

Whts stopping a thief from "bonking" you over the head now and using your finger print to unlock your phone?
My god, do all you people take everything so seriously?

I have no idea what you are talking about. Smearing excrement on Samsung?

H

He should have said 'theatrical' instead of theoretical...
Well played :)

I see someone here has a sense of humor. Thank you for the smile.

Smearing excrement on Samsung will be the unlock feature for the Note 8. A simliar unlock method will be coming to iPhones...in 2020, when they perfect the excrement scanner to accept squishy poops so those of us with IBS can use it, too. Apple looks out for people of all races, genders, gender orientations and recognizes differences in bowel movements.

Now...getting back to the person who said we would regret this facial recognition technology after a thief hits us on the head with a lead pipe, all I can say is if I got hit on the head with a lead pipe I'd have bigger worries than a thief gaining access to my phone. I'd most likely be dead or brain dead. (ps I know that was a joke but there will be loads of folks pondering it seriously).

As for gaining weight or getting a sudden rearrangement of facial features by a hypothetical thief...dudes and dudettes...how do you all unlock your phones now when your prints fail to work? And there is the option to re-register your face, your irises, and your prints as they develop any changes over time.

Great Zeus.

I don't know what your point is. But that clickbait video sure won't help it.

Aka trying to give Samsung a bad name for this feature, which he'll praise when Apple releases it. You aren't, by any chance, autistic?

Btw, his post is ridiculous
