Game controller?

I'm seeking to get a game controller compatible with my 2012 iMac with OS. 10.14 If possible I'd like it to work with my MacBook Pro 2019, but that's secondary.

I found a USB controller a while ago but it wouldn't interface with an Apple OS. I needed to boot under Windows to make it work. I want to play some games under Apple and need advice as to what kind of controllers work with the Apple OS.

A PS4 controller is supposed to work all the way back to macOS 10.10.

Any USB controller that support HID should work.

I used ControllerMate to view the list of buttons and axis on HID devices. It hasn't been updated in awhile. It seems to work with Catalina (at least the HID functionality) but not with Monterey.

I was going to ask Santa for one of these controllers. I am an amateur gamer with a M1 Mini. Before I ask Santa for this does anyone have any experience with this one or any suggestions on a better one ? Thank you for your time and help.
