Did you at any stage notice this slow down because of throttling? Did you get any temperatures by any chance? Thank for doing this! Doesn't look too bad but I'm assuming you only tried a custom game for a few minutes? Have you tried playing a full game to see if there's any degradation of performance?

No, never noticed any slow down (if there was throttling, I didn't notice it) , but I didn't play for very long (played for ~5 mins). Temperature wise, I didn't capture any specific number, but of course, it did feel hot at the bottom center, but not scalding hot.

I won't have time to play any full games on this thing for a while; my work has been keeping me too busy for the rest of the month, so I may only have time to do a full game probably sometime in the next month or so. I primarily bought this thing for work ;) Hopefully someone else can chime in with more in-depth numbers; mine were very preliminary, and I mostly wanted to know if the game could even work at certain settings. Overall, I'm impressed that this little beast can even run this game w/out a hitch.

No problem. Thanks for the info you provided.

I've never played a public match. Sounds cool though. Simultaneous turns you still have to wait for everyone to move right?

Everyone moves simultaneously during each turn timer, where everyone inputs moves (e.g. warring actions, movement). After everyone has moved and "ended turn" within the turn timer, there is a big calculation (where the CPU is needed) to determine the starting parameters for the next turn. This central calculation for all players is processed by the host's machine and then these parameters are sent back to each player, whose CPU must process this info and reset the board locally. The startup of the next turn is where having a poor CPU hurts your performance. If warring, higher end local CPUs can process initial parameters and then early turn (i'm talking the first ms here) attacks faster and might get one or two extra attacks in before the slower player can process them. It's a small advantage but in pro games this matters a lot (less than 5% of players so don't worry lol). Playing on tiles (the 2D representation) dramatically speeds up this performance.

Once you play humans in Civ5 you will never go back to the AI. In a game with so many strategies and the randomness of human personalities, you'll find it quite an addicting experience once you develop skill.

Thank you all of you for the test, seems the performance is better than my expected.

All the blizzard stuff runs pretty well. Hearthstone looks and plays fantastic. WoW plays well on 'Good' Graphics settings.

Thats with all my other stuff still running on 7 different desktops.

I really love this machine :)

What about StarCraft ?

----------

Starcraft 2 HOTS 1024x768 low 120 fps
CS GO 1024x768 low 70 fps
Diablo 3 1024x768 low 32 fps

Have you tried SC2 at a higher Rez ? And maybe abit higher setting?

So, I play Diablo 3, StarCraft 2, Hearthstone, and World of Warcraft (yes all Activision/Blizzard) and all of them play great. Hearthstone, D3 and SC2 I leave on the settings chosen for me, and they play and look good enough for the stints I play (which, because of the nature of the games, are shorter 20-30 minute jags) and I haven't messed with those settings much. If I keep WoW on "Low" settings my framerates stay above 60 (mostly in the 70+) even in large raids and dungeons and in town around the auction house / areas where we're all equipping up. If I move them up to "Fair" they go down into the 40's now and then, and tend to do that setting when I know I'm going to be in town and flying around for a while so things look a bit better.

hows the temperature while gaming?

Hottest I've ever seen it get, when I wasn't paying attention and put it on the couch so it heated up, was 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Interesting...
Which rMB are u using? Base model?

so almost all blizzard games are v ok even for this macbook, maybe starcraft 2 is not, but wow diablo and hearthstone are also league of legend and csgo

There are a lot of great games, new and popular, that will run just fine on the rMB. It seems many people equate gaming with only intensive 3D FPS games. But there are tons of games, new and old, you can run on this little computer. Here are a few games I've tried that work just fine:

Dreamfall Chapters
The Fall
Homeward Remastered Collection
King's Quest (Bootcamp)
Legend of Grimrock II
Murdered: Soul Suspect (Bootcamp)
Pillars of Eternity
Shadowgate
Stasis
Transistor

It's nice that Intel has much better integrated offerings now than it once did back in the GMA 900 days.

Totally dependant on the game and how you set it up, if your looking at buying a 12" Retina MacBook with gaming in mind then truthfully your looking at the wrong device.

That being said with careful set up some games can perform very well; System Shock 2, updated graphics, with the same tremendous gaming experience. A combination of Mod`s and smart settings in the games cfg files results in a very decent experience.

Personally I don't game a lot, if I did the rMB would not be my first choice. The few games I do play could probably run on a toaster, SS2 being likely the most demanding...

Q-6

System Shock 2 is such an awesome game. Thinking of it makes me want to go through it again!

But yeah, the rMB shouldn't be on your list if gaming is your primary concern. But it's a nice secondary perk. I have lots of older games on Steam I've always wanted to get to but never had the chance, and the fact that the rMB can run them admirably is very welcome as it gives me more options on my down time while traveling. I loaded up Castlevania Lord of Shadows, a 2010 PS3 game released in 2013 for the PC, and it plays surprisingly well.
