My 85 year old mom has been using an iPhone since the first edition. She currently has an iPhone 5 and can email, text, take photos, and use Apple Pay. Pretty good for an older person.

Oh absolutely, there's people who choose/are able to embrace technology, and those who can't/don't. Scales slide, and are occasionally broken.

GameStop

Hopefully GameStop won't ask for ID stupidly like they do with Visa or Mastecard payments.

GS Rep: "Can I see your ID?"

Me: no. Card is signed.

GS Rep: I need to see your ID to take your credit card.

Me: no, you don't. Card is signed. It's a violation of Visa and Mastecard acceptance rules to ask for ID with a signed card.

GS Rep: we do it for your protection.

Me: no, you do it for gamestop's protection. The card protects me from fraudulent charges. Me showing you my ID would give you my license number, my birth date, my physical characteristics, and my address. That's enough, along with my credit card, to do some real damage to my identity.

GS Rep: I'm just following the rules.

Me: No, you're violating the rules.

I fully agree, but you'll likely see a large increase in NFC support by October, when everyone has to upgrade their card readers to chip-and-pin or be stuck with fraud charges. I think a lot of stores will spring for NFC while they're at it.

As long as those companies aren't a part of that consortium that is going against Apple Pay. It was in the news a lot last autumn, but I've completely forgotten what it was called and haven't heard a single thing about it since then.

We shop less at both Kroger and Costco in favor of Meijer in Michigan.

Accepting or denying Apple Pay has been a USP that changed our family's pattern in grocery shopping.

Yeah, there usually isn't much difference in grocery stores, though I do like HyVee. But I'd totally pick one that has it over one that doesn't. Unfortunately in this part of the country, none of our grocery stores support it.

I guess those who don't see the need replacing something that doesn't need fixing. Some people still use home phones and the provided ones at hotels. My grandparents finally got feature phones provided their insurance. They like smart phones but don't feel the need to get one.

Ok.... But what makes them traditional? It can't just be a lack of tech use.

This is great n' all, but Trader Joe's! TRADER JOE'S!!!

Yeah and I always feel like I need to do my own bagging at TJs, which means I have no time to get my wallet out, look for the right card, swipe, etc. Apple Pay would be really nice there.

Why don't they just enable this worldwide??
We have contactless cards and readers all over the UK - we've already learnt that Apple Pay isn't limited to partnered companies in the US so surely we could just use it at any contactless terminal anywhere?

It isn't so much the merchants, it's the card issuing banks that are ones who have to come to an agreement with Apple regarding ApplePay.

They really need to work on getting more grocery stores to use Apple Pay. But this is still good news.

More people are needed on both sides. My credit union is still one of those not supporting it, although at least I have a Barclaycard that I can use at places that take Apple Pay. Hopefully with Samsung introducing Samsung Pay, that will basically double the amount of people who can pay with phones and force more stores into accepting it.

I just paid with it for the first time at Panera today. Target uses the SAME EXACT POS devices, so I would really appreciate Target HTFU (hurrying the F up) on accepting Apple Pay with the Red Card. You'd think the people who got breached would be running to support a service this much more secure. I know preparations must be made to support something at so many retail outlets, but DAMN.

Also, fast food places need to develop a better method than hanging that big brick out the window like McDonald's does. I ran into a Wendy's in Alabama that had a tiny scanner mounted to the outside of the building. I hope everybody with a window who does this moving forward implements something like that. The girl at the McDonald's I went to thought me handing her my phone would somehow work. Methinks they don't train everybody on that stuff much yet.

If McDonalds would ditch the MX860 and get an Ingenico IPP350 for the drive through that would be perfect. They still would have to hand it through the Window but it's more manageable.

That sucks that your bank still doesn't support it. Mine wasn't at launch but was one of the first post-launch. Anyway, I think Target is part of that consortium of stupid companies that are backing that competing platform (ok, finally looked it up as I forgot about it, CurrentC). I haven't heard much from them since they got hacked last year. Target in particular, like you said, has much to benefit from using a secure platform like ApplePay.

I think eventually fast food places will integrate it into the ordering screen/speaker system. I see the future of fast food as thus: You order it and pay in the app, and when you get into the drive through lane it senses your device and puts in the order. They could even implement a "fast pass" lane for those people so that they get their food even faster, especially if they order it ahead of time. The logistics need to be worked out but it's just a rough idea.

There are so many awesome ideas that can be developed using these systems. I'm hoping in the future your receipt will automatically get tagged to your account and you will have a record of them. It's nice getting emailed receipts from Home Depot, but even that is tedious to keep up with.

Store loyalty cards are also a must. I think that will come as Apple and all the other parties involved figure this stuff out. It works pretty well when the cashier has seen it before. I'm fine with being a little bit of a guinea pig for this so later it's as normal as credit cards.

I like the ordering idea as well. I know I could save places a bunch of time putting my order in the phone and just scanning it at the drive-thru or counter. It would also help big orders that could be checked at an office and then just scanned in. Pizza places have done this very well online, so it's up to other places to figure it out for quicker orders. I would also eventually love to be able to do some of these things on my iPad and then it syncs to my iPhone since an iPad is much bigger.

That receipts idea is fantastic for doing taxes. Would be even better if I could tag purchases and auto sum certain tags. My wife could tag all her daycare expenses as she makes them and save a ton of time.

Exactly what I was thinking, except more like - 200,000 retail locations and 500,000 vending machines.

And 200,000 of those vending machines are controlled by one company, USA Technologies. They all of course accept any NFC payment method, not just Apple Pay.

Am I still misunderstanding this, or are all the companies hitting the MR headlines for "announcing partnerships with Apple to accept Apple Pay" simply installing new POS terminals so they can generically accept RFID payment methods, one of which just happens to be Apple Pay?

Some are just adding terminals. Some are adding Apple Pay to their apps. Some are adding iBeacons.

Why don't they just enable this worldwide??

Besides the cash percentage that Apple wants per purchase (which is not that much in the US, but can be far too much elsewhere), UK banks are reportedly not happy with the amount of transaction information that Apple wants back in reports.

(By getting such aggregate info back from the banks, Apple can continue to proudly exclaim that they don't store any info DURING the purchases themselves.)

This.
