    Hi.

I'm thinking about moving to a 27" iMac (i5 and 4850) in order to get a everything-in-one machine : movies, music, work, photo and photo editing (my favorite hobby) and gaming (my other favourite hobby).

Well, the 4850 is a good card. But what about in 2 year? It won't be able to play games at native resolution, and we'll have to play at 1920x1080 or 1650x1050.

    What about that?

if you are more than a casual gamer i won´t recommend an imac over all.
the native resolution of this (for sure great) display is too much for this video card.
if you can live with reduced details and resolution i think you will be able to play actual games in mid settings.
but thats not the way i would prefer gaming.

therefore the mac pro is your only way to go - and so do i, but that depends on the price and when a new mac pro will be availiable.

New iMacs and Mac Pros should be out soon with updated graphics cards. It would be worthwhile to wait a month or so and see what comes out.

Two years plus as a top-end gaming machine is just not the way the iMac line works. They are not gaming machines new, let alone after a year or two.

The lifespan/top-of-the-line aspect aside however - I have the i7 with the 4850 and it runs everything I have wonderfully in full res with full settings. Wheeeee! :D
