I am running Witcher 2 in OS X on high AA off, SSAO off @ 1440x900 and it plays really well for a notebook, just need to see what latest firmware & 10.8.3 does...

Since the latest updates (firmware & 10.8.3) I can now play Witcher 2 at 1440x900 on Ultra settings need to disable Cinematic Depth of Field only, or the graphics black out (outlines only) or 1680x1050 on high with AA, SSAO and Motion Blur disabled, large textures, which is a big difference on previous, pity 2880x1800 remains a slide show :p

Realistically 1680 looks to be the absolute max resolution on the Retina, with some of the "bells and whistles" turned off. To my eyes on the Retina display @ 1440 on Ultra looks the best and offers decent performance for a notebook. 1440 is also second on the drop down menu next to 2880, so looks like some deliberation in place.

Apple`s own cooling algorithm allows for some lofty temperatures pushing the GPU past 90C, I use UltraFan and this keeps the GPU cooler longer, at the cost of some noise intrusion, nothing that a set of good earphones cant fix :p

More blurry than 1280x800? How is this possible? 1280x800 is lower.

Well, less sharp bc 1280x800 has 1:1 pixel mapping. That is on the 13".On the 15", 1440x900 will look great bc that has 1:1 pixel mapping.

can you guys help me
i am having this problem where after i play my game for awhile the performance drop down and never go up again
i have use gpuz to check and the core clock have decrease
i don't want to said this but i envy you guys who got 90c on their temperature
mine will hit around 90 and drop down to 80
that when i know my performance have drop
i can never play starcraft 2 on medium ...
i will get 80 at the start but then my performance will decrease drastically
i want my gpu to be performing at it max performance all the way though...
90c is ok for me.

Try downloading 10.8.3, and the new SMC update. If that does not work, try an SMC reset.

So where previously a SMC reset would give me great performance in BF3 etc. Now I can't get that performance anymore.. So no, this SMC update did NOT fix my problem but made it WORSE.

Too bad for me I guess.. even Awesomenauts lags now..

Right so the first mission of Heart of the swarm, where you can first control the drone:

Before: 75 FPS

After Efi patch: 28 FPS

Settings are 1920x1200 with all to max, lightning high, aa off, vsync off, indirect shadows off.

Wish I never updated..

i have already done all of that
i am playing on bootcamp by the way
what nvidia driver are you using
that might be the problem
i guess

For me the update seems to have somehow made my FPS more consistent.

When playing Skyrim I used to very between 50 and 100 FPS. Now I'm basically locked at 60. It seems quite a bit smoother, too.

On the other hand, I also just updated nVidia drivers, so that could be the culprit.

My SMC resets are (hopefully) behind me.

Tried a lot to make things work again, so far no dice.

Widows 8 says my performance in the OS has gone UP.
Still, the framerates in games stay lower than 2 days ago, no change in drivers, only efi update.

Oh how I wish there was a way to go back.. the SMC reset was far more pleasant to deal with than this "lol, nope, no great fps for you" problem.

Even wen something runs at a consistent 60fps it skips and jitters.. still pissed

this shouldn't affect you in either way, but doesn't hurt to try it:

NVRAM & PRAM Reset:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

either that or re-install the OS.. Cause im guessing you already downloaded the latest drivers from nvidia?

(I have not had time to bootcamp and play any games (bf3) after .8.3 and smc update so I dont know if i might have the same issue as you or if the downlocking has been solved)

I've tried the pram reset, but no dice.

Just tried to play company of heroes, as I do every monday evening with some friends. Guess what? not smooth anymore. :(

I know how you feel man!
any apple store nearby? Make a backup and take it there, let them run some tests and see what they say.

Only apple storeis 400KM away from this place, can't find time for that. Will eb buying apple-care next month though.. could always take it to a service center (40KM) over the summers holidays. Have to get my retention fixed anyway.. Could always give them a heads-up, but probably wouldn't be seen as a problem since the OS works just fine.

I'm having a similar experience to Eduardboon. For me it's mostly contained to Mechwarrior Online. Prior to the updates, I was able to play the game with consistent frame rates in the low 40s on medium settings. Post updates my fps dropped to high 20s consistently.

The only other game I play in Win7 is the new Simcity title and it appears to have NOT been affected. I see there's a new nvidia beta driver available for windows, so i'm going to download it and give it a shot.

What I have noticed is that games are almost smooth but not really. Even if they're going at a consistent 30 to 60 fps rate, it just seems they're jittering a bit. I gotta make sure about this because I can't compare it side by side like it was before. It's just how I feel it is.

Yes, this.

I do hope Apple gets to hear a lot of these complaints

so, ive been using this as a gaming PC for a few months now. it's been great.

Borderlands 2 has a decent framerate @ 1080p over HDMI. framerate might get better if i turn off PhysX, which is totally pointless.

Torchlight 2 plays nicely at native res with pretty much everything maxed and AA turned off.

Hey ggabriele3 - i can't seem to get the sound through my HDMI with steam and Borderlands2. The sounds comes out of the laptop speakers?! Tried messing with setting a lot but still no luck. Sound comes out find for everything else on my mac, iTunes, video... Is there a special knack to getting the sound out too?

Any pointers welcome...
