Entertainment is a HUGE business in, well, pretty much everywhere.

its why we pay $9 to see a movie, and pay $15 for the DVD release, which has more features sans the big screen.

its why gaming machines, games and the like cost "so much" in terms of others of the same type machines.

A PC can be had for under $500, but its not a "gaming machine" and wouldnt be for under $3k IMO.

A console can cost $300 and the games $50+, but in the end you can never "upgrade" it. I know Nintendo tried this on almost every friggen console they ever made, but in the market, they failed:

Bottom of original NES console, had a port which I assumed was for JP only.
I think the SNES was the same way.
N64 was supposed to have the DD addon, came out in JP, port on bottom again, and you COULD uprgrade the VRAM.
The GameBoy, I had a Nintendo power long ago that talked about a "keyboard" addon for it, making it into a PDA of sorts. Never heard of it again.
