I had bought a white iPhone 4 when it came out, and I had this issue, but it was only on the back. It wasn't much, maybe 1/64" and it was rite at the top. I noticed this when I first got the phone, but let it be, as there was nothing else wrong with it, and the home button was perfect.

After a few weeks I looked at it again, and it wasn't there any more. it flattened out I guess? If it had been on the screen I would have been worried that something would get in there, but now on the back...

Got any pics?

These sort of quality issue should not happen on a premium phone like this.

considering the phone cost £699 im definitely getting it replaced as soon as i can

At the rate they make these phones and the unforgiving nature of the buyers (many of them), **** happens.
If Apple said they needed a week to hand stroke all phones to make sure there are no visible flaws then do you think that would go over well? You're talking to a group of psychos who have literally sat around all week tracking a box in a warehouse, on a plane, on a truck to their porch.

Flaws will happen, Apple will cover it most likely unless you're being completely inane. I think the pic posted shows a cosmetic flaw that I would deal with until the overall hype settled down. I'd then make my way to Apple and get myself a replacement. No worries.

do stores usually keep some extra phones behind for replacements?

i dont want to queue up

Agreed. Despite being manufactured by imperfect carbon based life forms, their output should be flawless and perfect every single time...

Carbon based life forms can't be the creator...

I would not go now. It is not going to kill you and you have a time stamped photo of the "issue". Just use your phone and hit up the store in a few days.
Not on launch, it might take a while but contact a manager anyway to see if they put one aside for you.

The stores I've gone to have. They had them day 1.

designed that way?

Could be that it is designed that way so a small hit to the sides doesn't necessarily break the glass outright.

no chance it was designed that way, its bulging out at the point where i took the picture. rest is fine.
