Garage band step time recording

I've used the Garage band musical notation editor window to input notes. However what I want to do is to play the notes using the on-screen keyboard, or a connected MIDI keyboard and have them displayed in the editor i.e. a step time recording facility.
Is Garage band capable of this, or can I only record in real time using a keyboard?
