Garageband - Software Instrument Editing

Hi, I have had a mac for a very long time and i love it, especially Garageband. But recently the ability to edit the effects and sound generator has ceased to work. Can anyone tell me whats wrong?

Does clicking on the icons not yield any results? Like clicking a dead web link, nothing happens?

You could try re-installing Garageband, could've got corrupted somehow.
