Is anyone here using the Garmin onboard app on iOS 5- the one where maps are stored locally on the iPhone, NOT the app where it is downloaded as you go?

This particular app- Garmin USA- hasn't been updated since before iOS 5 came out, and if you sort the reviews by recency, there are a number of complaints. And I searched here, but it seems most people are using TomTom, Navigon, or Motion-X.

Can anyone confirm this app works as well as it should in iOS 5, with getting a GPS signal etc.?

    I giggled.

There's your solution. The logic here is that if so many people thought these $20-$80 GPS apps were so great that they haven't moved to $.99 alternatives, they must be really great.

If your issue is local storage, I don't know if you can wait, but I know Navigon has an update coming where you can only have maps for a certain set of states if you want. Not the currently available My Region. I mean, for example, New York and New Jersey only. Gonna be good stuff methinks.

    Oh-kay...

I am looking for local storage and going to buy in the next few days...currently deciding between Garmin, Tomtom, or Magellan.

Garmin has not been updated since Aug 2 and there is conflicting information about how well it works on iOS 5. Some of the conflicting feedback is probably based on the fact you need to delete and reinstall it.

Magellan is my second choice. Pretty good but very limited feedback.

Tomtom is my last resort. Like the HD traffic system, not crazy about the UI/map design.

I'm currently using Motion-X and really don't like it at all. I don't know what so many people see in it other than the very low price, but the UI is completely unnatural, I don't like the map designs, and the quality of the directions haven't been so great, either. Really want to replace it ASAP.

Edit: The new Navigon app came out just now, like a couple hours after I posted that.

I bought the Garmin USA app despite all the complaints and it works great for me. I only downloaded it once after purchase and never had an issue with it. I've always preferred Garmin GPS over others and they have not let me down on their iOS version. I am disappointed traffic isn't included as the stand alone gps units with lifetime map and traffic updates are extremely cheap now. Guess that's where they plan on making their money. For the record I have a iPhone 4s. In short I recommend the Garmin app though I did like the navigon app on my previous android phone. I still would've bought Garmin's version if they made one for android.

I use Navigon and I've been pretty satisfied. The version 2.0 was recently released which allows you to store only the maps you need (e.g., for the US, only the states you need; not the whole US if you don't need it all at once. Same for Europe). Useful if your phone is running low on storage space.

So far works fine with iOS 5.
