The Garmin unit in my car is great and I'd rather pay for a stand along GPS with 5" screen than not much less for this App, JMO.

I wish Apple had partnered with Garmin instead of Tom Tom.
Yep.
I'd rather have a perceived ugly UI than maps that have a high number of errors. UIs can be fixed easier than apple can fix their map issues.

Garmin have good maps - if apple fans can only criticise a GUI then that's pretty lame. Flyover on apple maps is a gimic.

Street maps is far more useful but apple don't have access to that so flyover is their response.
Yep.
Garmin's maps are indeed better than TomTom's and Apple's (at least right now).

The Garmin UI is more in line with a turn-by-turn GPS navigation app, with data points like distance remaining, time remaining, and ETA. There is also lane guidance (the image on the right shows the right two lanes as the correct lanes to be in).

Apple's UI does not currently offer lane guidance, nor does Waze.

Hopefully, Garmin will update their StreetPilot onDemand app with Google Street View and Urban Guidance.
Yep.
Garmin's map data is superior. Period.

Their addresses and POIs are more accurate. They peg my house dead on. TomTom puts my house a quarter of a mile down ths street.
Yep.

And no, I am not Jim Dalrymple.

Whilst the ui in these navigation systems is nice, why do we need such detail, it's dangerous to keep looking at these while driving, I find the new apple maps sufficient, ok it's not perfect, it sent me down 3 dead ends, but as for its ui, it does the job, doesn't make me want to keep looking At all the detail these others offer!

I haven't had any problem with apple map.
I was in Gatlinburg on my vacation and all the GPS failed to find my cabin, which was up top in a mountain, but apple maps helped me navigate.
But let me say this one more time. The best mobile map is Navigon. Nothing can beat Navigon.

I just used the new Apple maps for running a couple of errands here in Munich, and it not only found every address or POI I entered, but I really like the way it guides you around. I just wish it the navigation was the same for walking as for driving as I use the iPhone as my GPS on my bicycle.

USA version 'regularly' $49.99?
A quick look at appshopper shows that the price of that app is up and down more often than <insert euphemism>.
Think I'll wait until it's $25 again.

I think the simile you are looking for is "like a toaster".

I need Nav for my iphone 5

which would you recommend.

I need one that speaks politely, and can say street names, meters before turns...etc

Friend bought the tom tom, and it is ****** one. It say only turn right, left.. and sometimes he get a picture where to turn.

Well, I suggest you try Apple's built-in turn-by-turn directions, followed by Waze since both apps are free.

If neither performs to your liking, I recommend that you actually read the other comments in this thread. There are several recommendations.

Map app debate aside, why in the name of Zeus is the map for the entire USA, much cheaper than map for the UK and IRELAND? effort to cost ratio just dosent make sense???

This is basic software economics. The cost of development can be amortized over many more buyers in the USA. So yes, the cost per buyer is much lower.

Are you talking about the Apple maps, apparently provided by TT? Because it sounds like they are not as good as the native TT maps in their own devices/apps. I find both "real" Garmin and TT maps to be very similar.

I use gps for work, and I can tell you neither is a winner on this. One house accuracy does not make. When I have to find 15 locations in an evening, both are imperfect, I assure you.
All you have to so is use your eyes to see how ugly it is. Geez
I prefer the ugly colors to the all-the-same-color-group-with-slightly-varying-tint schemes. The contrast stands out, it's not good to have to stare at your gps while driving to make sure you are seeing the proper shade of blue. Aren't there various color schemes to choose, anyway?

Overall I prefer TT's routing to Garmin's for my usage, so right now I tend to use TT more.

Been a TomTom user for a long time. Overall TomTom is a very good app. I never really used Garmin. One thing I been mentioning to Apple and TomTom for a long time which I believe is still not possible is audio routing. Would be nice to be able to have the navigation app stream the audio to your bluetooth A2DP headset while you are running Pandora and streaming that audio through the headset port to the car speakers. Anybody else want this functionality? Lets ask Apple and the Navigation app vendors to get it done, it should be doable.

-Mike

You mean TT voice to one BT device and Pandora music to another BT? That would be in the OS, I think.

Personally, I'd want more control over how often it announces the next turn first. It can get annoying how often any of these apps speak up.

anybody figure out how to access the Street View mode in the Garmin apps? im on Garmin USA in a city w/ google street view, and dont see a button or whatnot to view it.

Benefit of the garmin app is that you have the map downloaded on your phone. At ~1.6GB it is sizable and not cheap, but when I went to Canada I did wish I had it. Data roaming charges are not nice.

and i may be weird, but i do like the simple no clutter UI of Garmin.

Your statement is not really complete. Garmin might have better maps in North America but in Europe their maps suck and TomTom's maps are way better.

Funny thing is that right now Apple's maps in europe are hopeless......so don't blame TomTom, blame Apple's implementation. My TomTom navigation devices has way better maps than my iPhone.......go figure!

I like the UI on the Garmin nuvi 50, you get everything you want/need and nothing more, that said it would be nice to have audio warnings for speed limits and school zone warnings, not sure if this is on other Garmin models.

I did try (in store) other units but found problems, Navman has no native Mac support plus you have to manually turn it on and off on the models I looked at, so each time you turned on the car. The Garman it's automatic, just set and forget. Others just seamed too complicated. I know there is a learning curve but if you can't easily enter an address without using a manual then what is the point of a GPS unit? They should be easy to use.

I agree it can go wrong, the other day it was like 2 streets out, thinking I was in a different area, this could have been a satellite glitch or something as it only happened once and I've been in the same are many times.

I'll keep an eye on the Apple maps and I guess I'll have no choice when I get my new iPhone but for now I'm not upgrading my 3Gs to iOS6, at least until Google gets there map app out.

Will never buy ANYTHING Garmin again

I have owned 2 devices by Garmin

- A Nuvi with North American and European maps.

- a running watch

Both were terrible. The running watch took so long to log on to satellites that I sometimes had to stand around for 15 minutes before I could begin my run. Eventually I got so angry at it that I just smashed this piece of **** on the ground.

The Nuvi was ok, I guess..was pretty useless for picking the best route say between New York and Boston...insisted you'd take i-95, which is awful. Once inside the cities it was ok. Once driving from Newport toward NYC it led us into some really crazy backroads in the middle of nowhere. Now it's broken for whatever reason I don't know...but the frustration has run high on this as well from time to time. I am just going to throw it out...and never purchase another piece of Garmin crap again. Seriously..a map update cost like $60 or something..are they crazy?

I've had a few Garmin's and never had to stand around for anywhere close to that long to acquire satellites. Did you ever contact their customer service to tell them the issue? Your situation is (was) definitely not the norm.

The UI as you mentioned is actually much nicer when using it, the screenshot basically shows all features on at once to show you what's available

When using it, it mainly focuses on your route, and on the side will show you current speed and distance to destination.

Unlike google maps or apple maps you can set up avoidances such as toll roads, u turns, highways, etc. At night it automatically switches to night mode with a darker color scheme which is nice.

Unlike google maps/apple maps you can also search for destinations via points of interest, for example Fuel stations and add them to your current route as a waypoint and then continue on your journey.

It does cost money but if the features are useful for you then it's worth considering, and as mentioned the UI is better than what the screenshots show

Funny

I'm the opposite. Garmin on my iPhone puts my house a quarter mile away and gives me weird directions to common places. The Tom Tom app works flawlessly. It points me in the most straightforward direction.
