No, not that kind.

I've seen quite a few good gay/coming of age/coming out films that a lot of my straight friends really enjoyed...

Get Real - Good British independent.
Beautiful Thing - Another British independetn - very good.
Edge of Seventeen - OK American film - touching ending.
LIE - Dark, but excellent coming of age flick.
Priscilla Queen of the Desert - Want to see Agent Smith in drag?
Nico and Dani - Excellent spanish film.

Anyone else?

Trick was very good and you can't help but fall in love with Jean Paul Pitoc after watching that movie.

I saw that on my Netflix reccomendations but didn't bite.

I'll have to put it on my queue.

Are any of them about gay cowboys eating pudding? :p
(Sorry, South Park reference.)

I don't know if it counts as gay or not, but one of my all time favorite movies is The Birdcage. (Oh! I pierced the toast!) I hear the French version is quite good as well, although I haven't seen it.

Indeed, it had not only Robin Williams in it, but also Nathan Lane and Hank Azaria, and some of the funniest scenes ever. Watching Lane, as a straight man playing a gay man pretending to be a straight woman was just amazing to watch.

I remember Tootsie too... which doesn't count as gay cinema, but Dustin Hoffman was good as a woman. Also a lot of great actors strewn throughout the movie. Pretty funny too. :p

Yes, he's openly gay. He is fantastic at improv too. My favorite kind of comedy.

My Beautiful Laundrette, tackled a lot of issues including sexuality.Shot as a TV prog in six weeks for peanuts, good film.

One of my first gay movies and still one of my favorites.

If you like movies like Room with a View or any Victorian love story, then you'd probably like Maurice. A story of a gay man in England--I think early in the 1900s or late 1800s. I haven't seen it since the '80s.

I would also recommend Wild Reeds and Ma Vie en Rose (My Life in Pink).

I know a few lesbians that love that movie, but I don't know why other than watching the hot lesbian scenes (or maybe that's just why straight guys watch it ;) ). It doesn't paint Gia in a favorable light at all, and Linda is not at all comfortable about her sexuality.

I just watched The Children's Hour which I thought was a fairly good story with a strong cast, although some of the scenes were in definate need of improvement.

Get Real and Beautiful Thing were great. So was Trick.

I really also loved Kiss Me Guido and Mambo Italiano. All Over the Guy was decent, didn't like it as much as the others though. Too Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Judy Newmar was an important film to me. As silly and stupid it was.

Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith) has played many gay characters in Aussie indy film.

The Birdcage was hilarious, and if you liked it you need to see La Cage aux Folles. Don't go in it expecting just a french language Birdcage, it's a very different film.
