Looks pretty good. The one thing your post (or site) doesn't mention is price.

    Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

brilliant, just what I've been waiting for. Have tried various other apps, and although some have their pluses, I ended up going back to using google's own webapp. I'll look forward to trying this out.

    All Items?

I view my feeds by the "View All Items" sort so I can see them in chronological order and all mixed together....does this app have that feature?

Maybe you can explain, because the screenshots don't seem to say, but what does this app do that the Google Reader website doesn't already do for me? It's already formatted for the iPhone, has all the starring/sharing/etc options I need, and best of all- it's FREE to use for a FREE service...

Why would anyone pay $3 for this?

edit: I do see that it has an offline mode which could be handy for some people, but my iPhone always has a cellular network connection and I don't need offline mode.. so it still seems redundant aside from that one feature.

@DCAppleDude: Nope it doesn't. If you want to view all items at once you should get Byline. I designed this app for people who are subscribed to tons of feeds and want to keep them organized.

@elbirth: Gazette works much faster than Google's web app because it doesn't have to load a complete web page, which is very painful on EDGE. It also has offline viewing capabilities which are important to some people. It's also highly powered by Core Animation and provides a smooth user experience (something the web app doesn't offer)

Looks nice - post again when it does come available. Since they removed the functionality from the app store to view all the apps by date I don't keep up as much anymore.

    Matt,

I purchased your app, and I am trying to sign in with my Google ID (by typing in my user name and password), but when I press the "Sign In" button, nothing happens, as it is not activated. I tried to tap the return key on the keyboard, but nothing happens. How do I activate the sign-in once I type in my user name and password? This should be very basic, and it should work right away! I also have Byline on my iPhone - could that app be conflicting with this app?

    Thanks for your input.

Can you only view items by an individual feed? Or is there a way to view all items of a specific folder/tag?

I read a review on the iTunes that said this app requires an eight-letter password...???

That is just weird. Change that, and I'll buy it. I'm not changing my password on all of my IMAP clients just for one app.

I guess that that is my problem. Thank you for posting this information, powpow. I use a password that does not have eight letters, and I'm surely NOT going to change it for this app. Matt, please change that requirement!! Google doesn't require it, so you should not be changing the requirements. Don't you think that such a requirement should be CLEARLY stated on the sign-in page so that we are not trying to figure out what needs to be done to be able to log into the app?

If this requirement is not changed, I will be getting a refund for this app! I honestly don't understand why anybody would add such a restriction. Hopefully, there is a good reason, but that restriction needs to be REMOVED!!

    gazette questions

    hey folks,

for the people that have tried gazette, can you let me know the following points.. from the available information, its not clear the answer to these.

    1. Is the syncing (offline mode) optional.. can you turn it off ?
    2. Does it use its own browser to view the pages, or is it using the safari browser built into the iphone?
    3. Does it essentially have the same functionality as the google web reader for the iphone? Does it have mark all as read for the specific feed? does it have the ability to view all messages or just new ones (like how you can in the google reader for the specific feed).

trying to determine which one to get.. byline or gazette.. I dont like bylines nonability to see invididual feeds..

    thanks!

    Hi,

I'm sorry this happened to you. Right now, Gazette requires passwords of 8 characters or more. I just submitted Gazette 1.0.1 for review, so it should be out next week for sure.

Offline mode works so well that you don't even know Gazette is in it.

Gazette uses its own browser, since switching apps in iPhone is a pain.

You CAN view and mark entire individual feeds as read!

Thank you, Matt! I'm looking forward to using this app on a daily basis, as I find it easier to use Google Reader as a repository for my RSS links.

    Thank you again!

    hi Matt,

thanks for your answers.. is there a way to turn off the syncing.. i saw a review on the app store where it was saying that syncing was taking a while and not able to abort.

As of now, no. However, Gazette 1.0.1 will have much better syncing performance.

Looks really nice, but please reconsider adding folder/all items as options.

Right now, I'm caught between Gazette and Byline. Byline allows all items and folder, Gazette allows individual feeds.

Sometimes I read all items (casually while waiting for stuff) sometimes individual feeds (when I want to read a specific publisher) so there's no one app for me.

So, it's kind of a horse-race at this point to see who adds all three. Then I'll be ready to buy.

I do not see what your issue is. I have folders in Gazette and then my feeds that fit that subject are in each of those folders. It is all set up through Google and not his app which allows for a smaller app that is less cluttered with code. I think its perfect. Set it up the way you want in Google Reader and that is how its displayed on Gazette...seems pretty easy to me.

Well Byline gives you an option to view all unread items at the top level and then when you open a folder you see all unread items for that folder where in Gazette there is no option to view all unread items at the top level nor can you view all unread items for a particular folder you instead have to drill down to each individual feed.

I was actually thinking about this very same thing myself while I was evaluating Gazette, it would be great to get the best of both items so developers ready, set, go!

Gazette will have that option in version 1.1 which should be out in 2-3 weeks since I'm rewriting the database engine. I also heard from a customer that the developer of Byline has no plans to divide the folders into feeds.

Ok...i can see part of and agree with one of your noted issues and that is the newest not being at the top and having to drive through those you have viewed to get to your last view.

However, the view all items is very simply fixed. In Google Reader you can assign your feeds to multiple folders. All one has to do is create a folder called "All Feeds" or similiar and put all of your feeds in that folder as well as your subject folders. Again, this is a very simple and quick fix on the users part and keeps code down in the App area.

One has to remember that this App shares all the settings that you set/maintain in Google Reader. Start there first to set up preferences and these carry forward into Gazette.

Granted there are a few minor short comings but think that Matt is FARRRR more concerned about fixing his App then any of the others and I feel that what he has accomplished is so much better then any of the others I have used at a very reasonable price.

    Keep it up Matt!

I just purchased this apps and it is great !!

But have a auto sync on/off option is better because sometime only want to read the downloaded news and dont want to use high price 3G data when no wifi connection around.

    Thanks
    Joe

Gazette seems to have an issue with certain feeds where it doesn't display the contents of the article for example BoingBoing's feed, viewing the same feed in Google Reader and in Byline displays the content of the article so it isn't like it is one of those pesky feeds that displays only the title or part of the content.
