The real benefit will become apparent in a few years when the increased performance and amount of RAM will allow the phone to keep up with newer OS versions better than the previous models will. It also allows Apple to eventually wind down production on old chips (though I guess the A13 will stick around for a while in the new Studio Display).

I know so many people who love their iPhone 6/6S/7/8/SE2's and even consider the newer 12/13 mini models to be too large, despite the physical footprint being roughly equal. The reasoning being that it's harder to reach the entire screen on the minis. They will love this new phone.

Some good points well made ?

Both have the same chip and same amount of RAM. Who-da thunk it?
As others have said, there are a few different versions of the A15. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPad mini 6 have an extra GPU core over the base iPhone 13, though the mini's is also under-clocked by about 10 percent. Apple could have gone for a different variation of the A15 with the new SE, but so far it appears to match that of the iPhone 13.
So what's the excuse for the SE3 to not have night mode on the camera?
It probably has the same camera as the SE2 (and 8?). Night mode probably uses features not present on the older camera module (e.g., faster readout). At this point Night Mode is old enough that I would have expected it on the SE3 if there weren't any hardware limitations, but I could be wrong.

Err, what do people expect? It has the same chip.

But most likely a underclocked processor

Edit: the processor speed is the same which is shocking, though why underclocked the iPad Minis one but not this one

It’s possible that it could have been down clocked as well. So it’s good that it appears not to be the case.
A lot of people don't probably know this but A15 comes with multiple variants and clock rates.

iPad Mini 6 has a 2.9ghz clock rate for example. This also helps a lot with the battery life.
So Apple should have thought about that instead of rebadging a 6 year old fone at a budget that can compete with their flagship in performance.

If you look at the linked scores, they show the same frequency

When Apple states that SE 3 has “1.2x better graphics” than SE 2, do they mean that graphics performance is increased by 20% or 120%?

By “120%” I mean twice as fast as SE 2 but plus an additional 20% of SE 2’s performance.

Like if SE 2’d performance was a number “100”, SE 3’s performance would be “220”.. right?

Or is “1.2x” just a fancy way of saying “20% better”?

20% better

In the past many times they just say uses the same AX chip and it comes to find out its down clocked and does indeed perform slower then one would expect
It'll still smoke the competition with ease.

Little pocket rocket of a phone.

20% better
Yes. I checked gpu benchmark scores for iPhone 13 vs SE 2 and there’s a 20% difference.

My summation of SE 3’s upgrades are(in no particular order):

1. A15 chip aka around 1.3x better single core score, 1.4x better multi-core, and 1.2x better graphics over SE 2020.

2. 5G cellular (sub 6Ghz). But can’t make use of the extra fast mmWave 5G.

3. 4GB RAM (SE 2020 has 3GB RAM). In other words, 1.33x RAM.

4. No upgrades to camera hardware. But addition of Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 4, and Photographic Styles, which are software-based photography improvements, offering better handling of high-contrast scenes and noise reduction, etc. However, still no Night Mode.

5. (Seemingly) around *20% better battery life overall compared to SE 2020. This might be just because of A15, but could also be because of a few more mAhs.

*Unconfirmed until reviews are out.

6. *More durable front and back glass panels.

*Not marketed as “Ceramic Shield”. So it’s unclear how big the improvements are.

7. Comes in new, slightly different color options: Starlight(white) and Midnight(black) and Product RED. Product RED option appears identical to SE 2020 Product RED color.

8. Starting price for 64GB base model is now $429 which is $30 more than the SE 2020.

.. and that’s it, I think? No other changes or upgrades?

This device has great appeal to many, I’m sure, but the cynic in me just sees a refurbished iPhone 8 with performance only relevant if you spend all day running benchmarks on a cellphone ?
I still play games and any chance that they’ll work more smoothly is always good. The iPhone 8 was the first time I felt that iPhone was 100% ready for games, with smooth performance.
