Glam rock predated Kiss by many years; mostly by David Bowie and Marc Bolan amongst others. There's nothing that Kiss have done that marks them out as pioneers in anything, except hype over substance...

In defense, they were very good at what they did. Make generic anthem rock with just enough edge to seem rebellious and "cool". I have seen them live and they did put on a very good performance, very entertaining.
Which is good. If your music is vacuous then you'd better be a damned good showman!

Kiss is one of the first bands to become famous b/c of marketing ie. the star and kitty kats on faces. The long tongue, the blood..the flames. Whether or not you like them, anyone will half a brain recognizes that. I may be wrong, but they were one of the first bands, along with the Partridge Family, to have dolls. Yes...dolls! Odd, but how many people bought them!?

LOL. Wow, then they must be legitimate artists.

Pffft! next you'll be saying The Monkees were manufactured for a TV show too! :)
Im shocked.:p They are like what we call the Spice Girls today. Every decade has there own prepackaged music. Everyone has a boy band somewhere.

That lad we're good on that Rock School thing, shame about what the record company did to him.

I can only briefly remember the Rock School thing, but he did seem a lot more...well his age on that.

His songs are more the kind of things that someone 5 years older would be better suited singing. He just looks pathetic...

Mind you I hate the music anyway. :p

Oh, and guess what. Gene Simmons, as pompous as he may be (and he's got every right..he's slept with over 2,000 women) is SOLELY responsible for Van Halen. He discovered them playing in some dirt club somewhere.

Neither of those things is impressive in any way. Guy's just a douche, and he didn't really need to be.

Agreed. And even if your music is brilliant you need to be at least an adequate showman to make a connection w/the audience.

KISS made some timeless rock songs, changed the way bands do live shows, and influenced a lot of future musicians. Not exactly shabby, IMO. Simmons has always been very up front that the point of KISS was to have fun, be great entertainers and give the fans a killer show. When people get all "pfft, but they aren't virtuoso musicians" they are missing the point. It's like saying a gourmet dessert sucks because it doesn't make a good entrée.

Or be like Pink Floyd, sans Waters, and have the stage presence of a 3 week old banana peel. but have an absolutely awesome sound rig and light show!

All I know about Gene Simmons consists of what I learned from an infamous interview he did with Terry Gross on NPR's Fresh Air. He seemed liked a real *******, even though I only got to hear about ten minutes of the interview.

Oh geeez,

And tries to fit him into her checklist of what a man ought to be. That interview was doomed before it even started.

I've always thought Gene was a cool guy. If he's a friend of Donald Trump that has to mean something :)

He has his own style, which means that there will always be people who will like him or hate him, because he doesn't follow the 'norm'
