Anyone been able to find a non-OEM *just* smart cover for the iPad Pro? Looking for something to keep around as a backup of sorts for my keyboard cover.

Check out the Moko cases on Amazon. I've owned one for every iPad and just ordered a black one for my IPP, should be here tomorrow or Wednesday.
I bought the Moko in green. $15 including shipping. I like having back protection.

Now just waiting for my iPP to arrive (Tuesday). I figured I'd use that while I decided if I want the Smart Keyboard, etc etc.

yea I got the mojo and it is perfectly fine, it's not the slick deal apple silicone but its also 60 bucks cheaper! I also put on a best skins back protection. While that doesn't help during a drop it does for every day scratch n scuffs.

I am very surprised by the lack of third party smart cover case with just the front part. is there a specific technical or rights issue ?

^I'm wondering the same thing. Spent quite some time searching for non-Apple Smart Cover and can't seem to find one. You'd think there would be tons of options on eBay or Amazon. I have to Moko Amazon case/Smart Cover right now, and it's nice, but I hate the back.

I got a Moko - $7.

Does the job. It's about a 8 out of ten. A 9 or 10 would be lighter, (it's not heavy at all, just saying), but for $7? :D

GO for it.

Thing is, the iPad is so frigging thin and light, any bulk whatsoever is noticeable. You always could shave or grams and mm. Apple does right? ;)

Everyone is ignoring the OP's requirement that it be a cover without a back

I actually think a good cover is more difficult than making a full case, because the magnets must be strong enough to remain clipped on in different positions. I think your only option is apple's. I have the Smart Cover for the iPad Air, and the engineering around it is actually pretty impressive around the magnet attachment area. Same goes for the smart keyboard for the iPad pro.

Adding a back case is an easy way out because you stabilize the cover with the strength of the back

I've been looking for the same thing! Just a simple thin smart cover that doesn't cost $80. It's wild to me that one from Hong Kong or China has not come out yet.

Any updates on this? Has anyone been lucky enough to stumble across a non-OEM smart cover for the 12.9 pro?

Nope, still none. :( I think it might have something to do with the new magnetic hinge that the ASK and Smart Cover use. It is different than all of the other designs for all previous iPads that supported a smart cover.

I ended up buying Apple's "official" Smart Cover and ASK.

I don't think it's that. Even previous models too like the iPad Air and iPad Air 2 to my knowledge did not have third party smart covers available.

Yeah I'd quite like one too. I've got the ASK, but for when I don't need that, Apples colours just aren't floating my boat.

I got this MoKo yesterday and it works great. 8.99, can't beat that especially with the prices I've seen in big box stores!

My 12.9 in came early on Monday - nice surprise but now I wanted a case immediately..ended up at Best Buy. Eh, I love Apple, but c'mon $70 for a Silicone cover? They didn't have Apple brand smart covers in stock. I ended up getting a brand called "Modal" (which said "smart cover", it wasn't) but this was an overpriced piece of junk and I returned it 2 hours later.

Trouble is that's got a case attached to the back of it.

I've got a nice leather full case for when I need it but I think like the op, we're looking for just a Smart Cover style without the case attached.

I've just come across this, it does come with a rear shell but going by the description and the images it would appear that the cover itself can be used independently of the case. It certainly does seem to have magnetic attachments even if they're not the most elegant I've ever seen.

Edit*

Yup, deffo separate, here's an excerpt from the description:

It protects your iPad Pro screen without covering up its durable aluminum back

I can’t believe this was never made. Apple must own a patent for the Smart Cover that attaches by magnets.

I purchased the white one but I’d love to have one in blue or red to match the Apple Watch bands I use most. The 12.9” iPad Pro never came with anything other than white and gray, even though the smaller iPads have covers in a multitude of colours.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was looking for a front only case. Is the official Apple one the only option ?
