So I have had an ongoing issue with a faulty fan which was due to go to an apple store last week. Miraculously the issue resolved itself before the appointment, and whilst I was still going to get it checked out, I decided to hold off due to the difficulty in getting to my local store.

Typically the issue has returned, but now I have installed Yosemite. I'm guessing that because this is a 'credible' installation (i.e. not a beta downloaded elsewhere :roll eyes:) I should be fine in receiving help from the guys @ Apple. Has anyone been into a store in the last couple days and had any trouble receiving assistance? It's just a little way for me to head if I get turned away with an
    'unsupported' system.

Did you install Yosemite over top your Mavericks installation? If not, can't you boot into the Mavericks OS before going in? That way you don't risk them turning you away due to the beta software, for which they probably can't support, diagnose or troubleshoot.

Unfortunately it was over the Mavericks partition. From what I can gather from the issue, it sounds more like there is a blockage in the fan. I was hoping it was a case of opening her up and checking/replacing it. I suppose I can attempt to head in. What happens when paid developers have issues and need store assistance, (though I suppose a lot are clever and will self diagnose :p)

If you want to, you can open it yourself and look for obstructions. Use www.fixit.com to help guide you. They have awesome instructions and photos of every step.

I don't know what kind of support paid dev's have regarding beta software and hardware issues.

A fan issue shouldn't be a software related issue - more than likely some SMC issue. I would still take it in. I've taken an iPhone I used for iOS beta/compatibility testing in to the Genius Bar with a hardware issue and had no issues getting it replaced.

Of course it can't hurt to bring it in and have them look at it. But if getting there is a hassle, as it is for me, I'd call ahead to them and explain you're on the Yosemite beta and having a fan issue and see if they say they'd look it at anyway. Better to be safe (in calling ahead) than sorry (driving all that way to be turned away).

Shouldn't be an issue, from Apple's website:

"Will installing the pre-release software from the OS X Beta Program void my hardware warranty?
No, installing the beta software does not void your hardware warranty."

    Edit:

Here's the page, in case you need to show it to them:

As amoda says, Apple doesn't care. I had a broken fan once which they replaced, and I was running Lion a few weeks before it came out.

Just thought I'd let you (and anyone else who comes across this through search) know of my experience yesterday with the Genius bar and Yosemite.

I've been having an issue with the laptop overheating and shutting down. Made an appointment and took my laptop in. A little silly, but to be honest I forgot that Yosemite was Beta until the Genius mentioned it.

In the end, while the Beta doesn't void your warranty the laptop is effectively unserviceable until you either re-install Mavericks or wait until the software is out of Beta.

    Been Helped!

The Genius at my local Apple Store helped me when I needed help so what you experienced is not universal. Why don't you try going back and speaking with a different Genius.

Try a different Apple store. They can still run Apple Service Diagnostics on it as they boot directly to it over their own network. That way they can eliminate hardware issues.

They can also reset the SMC and PRAM.

After that, then they can talk about it being a software issue.

For some time my Super drive on my mid 2011 27 inch iMac hasn't worked. I have so many wifi and Bluetooth issue on Yosemite I decided to switch back to Maverics, but I had trouble because I wrote Yosemite over Mavericks. I know, bad move.

So today I had my Genius Bar appt, good crew in my local store. Told them how my keyboard and track pad both do unpredictable things. The Genius used a wired keyboard and mouse when he ran diagnostics. I asked them to reinstall Mavericks, I have all my stuff backed up on my Time Capsule, what a great investment. They're busy, I think I get it back Thursday. I'm sight impaired, legally blind actually, so Yosemite and it's flat look and smaller fonts isn't user friendly for me. I'll be happy back on Mavericks. I'll keep reading these threads, but I think I'm staying on Mavericks.

As usual the Apple Store team is great. They're getting Dunkin Donuts and bagels when I go back !!
