Hi

Sorry if this question is stupid.

I dropped my Macbook pro into the genius bar last week and was wondering if I am meant to have been emailed a receipt or something to prove I have left it there. I found the repair status website- https://selfsolve.apple.com/repairstatus/main.do

I was interested to check what was happening since I want my computer back and in doing so I realized I never got a case number as said you are supposed to on this support page http://support.apple.com/kb/HE66

"When you request service online or take your product to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for repair, you'll be given either a Repair or Case ID. You can also find your Repair ID in the confirmation email you receive from Apple. "

So to people who have left their mac at a genius bar before- did you get a email with your case number?? or a receipt or anything? I NEVER received or was given a case number or got a "confirmation email". Should I follow this up?

Didn't you have to sign a piece of paper when you left it at the Genius Bar, authorizing them to do the work (and acknowledging all of the things that could happen to it during the repair)?

I thought the case# was on that.

From my experiences it depends on which Genius you get. When I left my 17" to have its upper case replaced, they only gave me a copy of the repair order (with the repair ID) because I asked for it. No e-mail or anything. But when I had my rMBP looked at, the Genius gave me a repair work order immediately after creating it.

You sign on iPod or iPad and they email the receipt right away. The receipt has the case ID that you can follow in the above website. Call the store you left it in and ask them about your Mac. If you had a different email/person that registered your Mac, it's a good place to look for it there. My Mac was registered on a different person (I exchanged my MBA for rMBP), so they changed it under my iTunes/Apple store user that has all my details on it.

That's probably it!....I know it is registered under a different name, although I dropped it off under my name.... weird......I can't find the receipt email but I will keep looking who would the sender be? I can't see it under "apple".

I might just call them tomorrow even though it has only really been there for 2.5 days and just ask about it..... I don't want them to think I am inpatient it is just so frustrating not having a computer.

It doesn't matter under what name you leave your computer. Eventually all the communication goes to the person that registered the laptop under his or her AppleStore account. They had to match your name with the name of the registered person (based on the S/N of the laptop), and change it if that doesn't match. Call 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask them to register the laptop under your name (or call the store and do it there. However, you can encounter some problems because you probably don't know the S/N of your laptop).
