Always curious how one comes across these 2 year old threads and revives them. :D

I tell u exactlly how. We were talking about this at work and I wanted to start a thread on it to see how my macrumors friends felt. But I did the proper thing and did a forum search. I found this old, not too long thread and wanted to c if people felt any different about it now.

Agreed. In many other languages/cultures they don't even say "bless you". Works fine.

Now that's just impolite!

I say bless you because it's nice to be nice to people. I know about the historical meaning of the phrase, but say it out of politeness.

What is annoying is when I have a hay fever induced sneezing fit and keep on getting bless yous!

My opinion sure hasn't changed. I thought it was a silly custom of perceived politeness a couple years ago and I think the same thing now. It doesn't bother me or anything but I do think it's a bit odd. I know a few atheists who say it and that always baffles me, leading me to believe that saying it is just a force of habit rather than a genuine thought.

I'm more to say "god bless you!"

:)

I don't get the big deal - you guys are the equivalent of if I held the door open for a woman and she got mad at me and said "I CAN OPEN IT MYSELF!" .. when I'm walking through there anyway. of course, if there's someone else that I know is coming through the door, I'll hold it for them regardless of their gender.

wTF?

That is true. I catch myself saying it a lot and think, why did I do that? My coworker just blew snot all over the shared keyboard, he should say excuse me.

No way is that the same thing. I hold the door open for anybody behind me. Do women still actual yell that? That seems like a women's movement type thing that was only done by women who were getting back from the day's bra burning.

How about dating someone, and they yell "Are you trying to smother me???", just for opening the door for her.

Women. :p

LOL. go figure. I'm like stevensteven, I do hold the door open no matter who it is. However, I see no problem with saying "God bless you" or "salute" or whatever when someone sneezes. It's being polite, IMO. Yeah, it might not be necessary, but I feel it's just being nice. and I really do not care what anyone else thinks about it. I'll still continue to do it. If someone doesn't want to say anything, that's Ok too. If I sneeze and no one says anything-I do not even think about it.

I think saying bless you when people sneeze is a stupid custom. The person sneezing should say excuse me just like you would do if you farted or burped.

Question:

Did you want to rant on this subject and Mroogled it?

The mental image I get from someone wanting to rant on a social norm, Mroogling it and bringing a two year old thread back to life is hysterical, IMO.

But if I had simply started a new thread, posters would have gone nuts with their "oh great another thread" rants.
