Get a copy of XP from restore disks on old machine

    I have an old gateway and was wondering if it was possible to get a copy of xp off of the restore dvd. My use for this will be using bootcamp on my imac for school related apps. any advice would be appriciated thanks

    Not possible. The gateway copy will only install on that computer. It's an OEM license and won't be valid on the iMac.

    Buy a copy or ...

    Typically windows licenses for pre-made pc's (Gateway, Dell, IBM) are custom licenses for that vendor and ONLY that vendor. Even if the machine is dead, the license dies with it.

    Through enough complaining and such you might be able to get a copy but I seriously doubt it. I've been party of the support group setting up pc's before and trashing them. This has always been the case.

    ok, now that i know that i cant get a copy of xp from old restore disks, does anyone have a link to a free download, or a good torrent download that isnt going to take 17 days, 4 hours, 36 minutes to download???

    Good Lord, watch what your are asking for on the forum. Go to cnet.com, hit the purchase link and buy a copy. Remember it needs to have SP2 "built in".
