The Home button is no longer a button but a sensor that vibrates the phone a little (called “haptic” feedback for some odd reason).

There’s nothing ‘odd’ about that, it’s called a ‘Haptic home button’, because it provides a haptic vibration that the home button is directly connected to the haptic motor on the iPhone, which gives the user tactile feedback.

It is a step backwards for me from the absolutely reliable button on the previous phone.

This isn’t true at all. Actually, quite the opposite, the haptic home button would have far less issues over the mechanical button, because the mechanical button was more or less ‘spring loaded’, which dirt/debris can get trapped in there, Plus with the haptic home button, it allows for a water resistance, and it has a quicker response time over the mechanical home button.

Agreed. I responded to this as well but with just an anectdote. But I already discovered how reliable the home button is (it's not). In general buttons fail all the time on all sorts of different devices. Sure, I prefer them for many applications (like games and anything where I want to use my device without looking at it) but they aren't reliable and use over time tends to wear them down.

Have to disagree from my experience. I’ve had several iPhones with TouchID and the real button. Not one of them ever had a button problem of any kind. For both my wife and me, the button has been totally reliable.

On the other hand, the “haptic” button after several months of use just doesn’t work well for me. I experience the vibration but nothing happens. Or I get the vibration and it still asks me to log in. Also, my response time with the vibration is much slower than the TouchID on my wife’s iPhoneSE regardless of what the specs might say. Maybe I bought an iPhone7 with a case of bad haptics. But those are my experiences and the basis of my opinions. YMMV.

An iPhone 8 might as well be from the Stone Age at this point.
As are hammers, and oil. And all 3 work today. Your point?

The home button was a pita for me ever since the original iPhone. Meaning, I hated having to always use it, and aim right at it FOR EVERYTHING... SO ANNOYING!!!

I too, "thought" I was team Touch ID, until I experienced Face ID for myself. The two aren't comparable, as Face ID blows Touch ID out of the water.

The silly forehead and chin were way overdue for a redesign as well. So with this, I hesitantly upgraded to the Xs and then Xs Max.

All screen, and Face ID are just such a pleasure to use. Do yourself a favor, ESPECIALLY if you're going to keep it another 5 years... GET THE Xs!!! It's head and shoulders better than the 8.

You'll thank me later.

I don’t like Face ID cause it’s too easy for some one to just hold up the phone to my face to unlock it. Doesn’t seem that secure for that reason. Nothing to do with how easy it is to use (in fact my problem is it is too easy) or how fast it unlocks the phone.

I get it... you're an international spy and these sort of things have to be considered. LMAO!!!

Seriously though, this is easily remedied by the "attention awareness" feature in Face ID settings.

Here check it out:

What is someone doing with your phone in their hand in the first place?

Grabbing it quickly and unlocking it before they run.... or well, not that I’ve ever had any run in with cops but you hear enough **** about them I don’t want them unlocking my phone so easily (fingerprint they can only order me to place my finger. They can’t order me to tell them which finger I programmed legally anyways).

Anyways, at least with the more likely scenario I posted the attention feature some one pointed out would fix that.

They can’t ‘order you’, but they can legally seize your phone and apply for a warrant to have it unlocked that way. No one needs to force you to have your phone unlocked at that time, unless it’s under exigent circumstances.

If you turn off face ID, what causes the screen to light up? Does it require a push on the power button?

If money is no object, the new iPhone successor to the XS. If you need one now, the XS or X if you want to spend less. If you can wait, get the rumored update to the iPhone 8 with new internals (a la iPhone SE after the iPhone 5s)

I went from XS to XR. XS was small for me. Lacking in width. I didnt get used to OLED screen and it used to freeze upon opening settings. That drove me crazy.
XR never ceases to surprise me. Its perfect for my use.
I have a 8 plus too which i will never part with. Absolutely marvelous phone.
Consider XR / 8 plus in your choices (even 8 is not bad)
