Normally I get applecare up front to just get it out of the way.

i put a 640gb hd and 80gb ssd in there that i will swap out in case it ever needs service.

But I got this last year, 1 year warranty expires June 1st.

would you get apple care to re-up it another 2 years?

The computer was, without my upgrades, $900 something after selling the free iPod touch.

And I think apple care is close to $200...

used to be able to buy it off eBay for like low $100 but now i think you have to buy it in the Apple Store itself because they changed their methods.

If it's worth it or not it's totally your decision. I would say not worth it as it is another 25% or so and I think that's too much. But if you do decide to get it don't buy it on eBay as you won't be able to activate it. Apple will need proof of purchase and the actual box, receipt, etc...from an authorized re-seller.

when dose the back to school promotion usually start

on the apple website they ony offer a $100 discount

I never have bought AppleCare, but thats because it just costs so much and i dont want to spend another 15-20%. But if the choice was there i would definitely get it. You have nothing to lose ;)

I just got a brand new MBP because of apple care. If i didnt have it i would have spent over $1000 in repairs and then $2100 on a new laptop. In essence i saved $1800 bucks by having apple care.

so is it worth it? i think it is. Is my case unusual? sure, but needing it and not having it is way worse then not needing it and having it you know. its a peace of mind type deal and i think $300 is definitely worth it.

If you're a student, Apple offers the student discount on AppleCare. If not, Amazon has it for cheaper than the Apple MSRP. As far as applicability, a friend of mine recently had her power adapter for her Macbook go bad. It caused a surge that fried her logic board and melted her external power Magsafe connectors. Took it to a certified repair shop, and the had it fixed and back within two days.

Since it was a certified repair center instead of Apple, she had to sign the invoice with the paid-by-Apple charges. It would have been a $775 repair on her $1100 laptop.

So yeah, it's worth it to have the piece of mind.

If I had your computer I would. You say you normally get Applecare so I'd get it for this computer as well.
