Can you do a device-to-device transfer at the Apple Store when getting a new iPhone? I want to trade-in my existing iPhone for credit and then do a device-to-device transfer.

However, I know that takes a long time...not sure if Apple will allow that.

Any one know?

Yes, you should be able to and they will take you to the set up table and one of their tech will assist you as well if you need.

If you come to apple store early enough you should be able to finish the transfer at the same day, assuming speedy internet.

Like said above they will gladly help and allow you to do it there, but expect it to take longer with their internet being slower while hitting the activation servers. It will also depend on how much you move over. Took about an hour to move everything over from my old to new. I use about 150GB of storage.

Also for the record, you dont have to trade in right away. If you are not on IUP, you can actually bring it later and they will still process the credit onto your card you want to use. That’s how I’ve been doing in the past. Purchase first, trade later.

You may want to ask them about that because due to covid, some stores may not allow it, some will prefer you mail it etc.

I got my device set up in-store since I was giving them my old one as a trade-in. But for me, since I had 230 GB of data on my phone, the guy chose iCloud backup rather than device-to-device transfer. That way the phone gets set up faster and the rest of the data downloads in the background.

For comparison, my parents only had very small amounts of data used (maybe like 15-20 GB at most), and I used device-to-device transfer for them. It only took 5-10 mins. Mine would’ve taken hours.

That is also what I usually do, but since I was doing the Verizon trade-in promo via Apple, he said I had to do it all at once. That was unexpected to me, but it all worked out.

I did phone to phone transfer in store and it saved all my passwords. Apple rep said I cloud transfer doesn’t save log in and passwords.

Hi guys,

may I ask about that method, because I've never used it and always used iCloud-backup.

What exactly is device to device? I've read the support page and understand it takes longer.

I am always worried about messing up my Apple Watch (cellular) and I'm using an eSIM on the iPhone as well.

So the last time I remember, I unpaired the Apple Watch and thus created a backup of said Watch. Then I did an iCloud-backup and restored the new iPhone from that backup. However, I remember that the whole process took a while too.

Unfortunately I think I had to deal with my phone provider again because the eSIMs weren't working.

Is the device-to-device better for that instance?

Very curious to hear more about it from people with more knowledge than I have.
Thank you very much!

Device-to-device clones the device it should move your sim over no problem. I find it more beneficial since it will move all logins/passwords over. iCloud doesn't move that information when restored as a back up. All backup/restore methods require you to download all you're app again so it only matters if you care about typing in all of your passwords again.
