Let me break this to you gently...

Amazon today introduced a new price drop on the M2 MacBook Air with 16GB of RAM, specifically for the 13-inch model with 256GB of storage. You can get this computer for $749.99 in two colors, down from $999.00.

Why?
With 16GB of RAM, an M2 has a lot of useful life to go (years and years and years)
Well first of all, don’t forget the m2 has a slower ssd on the base model (so we need to buy a 512gb model or higher) otherwise we can get similar performances to M1… and second well that’s around the range I change my Mac…

Years and years and years isn’t a lot… this Mac starting at macOS Monterey got
-Monterey
-Ventura
-Sonoma
-Sequoia

Maybe an extra 3 other years and that’s it !

Yes its not ideal, but for vast majority of people this will be a non issue, it is still very fast and with 16 GB RAM there will be far less disk swapping to the SSD so performance will be optimal most of the times. M2 is also fine for many people in terms of performance, and dont forget the new iPad Air has the M2 so it will be supported for many years.

I’d call this a “just ok” deal. Why?

The M3 with the same RAM and SSD size is $979 on the Apple Refurbished store. If you take advantage of possible discounts when buying through Apple such as discounted gift cards or shopping portals (some of which pay a higher bonus on refurb items), then you’re looking at less than $100 to bump up to the M3.

Is the M3 a huge deal for most? No. If you’re buying a 16/256 configuration, then you’re probably not a performance hound anyway.

BUT: the M2 Air is now 2.5 years old after its launch versus less than a year for the M3 Air. So if you’re gonna hang onto this thing for a while, consider that the M3 will (probably) go “vintage” later. Note that since Apple is still selling the M2 Air alongside the M3 Air, that’ll (probably) narrow the gap.

FYI for folks who don’t know, a model will be declared “vintage” (no longer supported and no OS updates) a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 7 years after cessation of sales, NOT introduction.

I’d personally make the small splurge to go with the M3 for that reason. And you have more configurations on RAM and SSD size to pick from buying from the Apple Refurbished Store, limited only by inventory and availability.

Lastly, if you’re a person who has had harrowing experiences with refurb products, the Apple experience will restore your faith in the universe. They’re truly good as new. You won’t see ANY wear and tear or have a depleted battery or anything like that. They come with the same 1 year limited warranty, and you can buy AppleCare. Some people say they think Apple refurbs are *better* than NIB ones since they’ve had an extra layer of inspections, although I’m not aware of any hard evidence to support that idea. Regardless, buy with confidence. Other than the basic b***h white box you get with refurbs, they’re identical.

Doesn’t mean that if the iPad Air has the m2 chip, it will be supported for the same time as the MacBook Air… for example the iPhone 7 has the A10 chip and the iPad 7 has also the A10 chip… but the iPhone 7 only support iOS 15 as lasted OS but the iPad 7 still supports the lasted iPadOS 18 !! Which means the MacBook Air m2 could be dropped BEFORE the iPad Air !

Ok I understand some people might not need a lot of performances but I would wait until M4 just to buy M3 cheaper… M3 is already 979 refurbished ! So price might drop around 100$! Buying M3 is almost a 2 years more recent machine which could be useful if you want to resell it !

These would be great machines for plenty of people (at the right price)

Normal users don't give a hoot about M1, M2, M3, M4 ... Apple will be supporting all these for years to come

Getting 16GB of RAM is the main concern (which is addressed with this particular machine under discussion)

Oh and by the way, if you are a student or a teacher… you can find the MacBook Air M3 at 999$ and it will be dropped at 899$ when the m4 will be released!

Years? Not a lot… WWDC is arriving soon… (which reveals dropped macs)… m1 support could be dropped in 2.5 years and the m2 in 3.5 years !

Yeah -- as post #2 up above pointed out, Amazon had this lower in November 2024 and MR even advertised it at the time!!

Exactly this. And the 8GB memory configuration has dipped down to $650 at times... the $150 premium for 16GB here is quite a lot. I *get* that 16GB is better for longevity, but Apple continues to charge quite a premium price for 16GB of RAM. I hope that narrows over time. This is only an "okay" deal today in my opinion, but still a great laptop for those who need it. I'm very happy with the M2 Air I've had for a few years now.

That's when I got mine! Great deal listed on the site. Thanks, Mac Rumors. :)

Oh and how it works :

M1 has been released with Big Sur so 2.5 years

M2 with Monterey so 3.5 years

M3 with Sonoma so 5.5 years

M4 with Sequoia so 6.5 years (which makes sense)

We do not know that's "how it works" with Apple Silicon

I predict Apple will support their own chips on a different time scale and schedule than they did with Intel equipment

You are right it could be more but I wouldn’t take any risk…
