Still have kids two iPad mini 4’s. Time to retire these POS’s and this sounds like a good one for the kids with a protective case

I would love to hop on this deal to supplement my MacBook Air M4 and iPhone 15 Pro as a middle ground. The old iPad Air 1st gen I’m using now as a proof of concept works decent enough in this role and I know the A16 would be so much better. But the 12 should be released at some point this year and would be on sale by Christmas anyways. Might as well wait till then.

Not sure how old your kids are, but one thing to keep in mind is that I do find the A16 iPad to be a bit on the bulky and heavy side. I suspect it would be a bit of an adjustment for them coming from the minis.

Just to add to this, my kids have never had minis but both recently got upgraded to A16s (4yo and 7yo) and both like them just fine. The 4yo even adapted well to not having a home button pretty easily.

Just a heads-up . . . and this is just my experience with the latest iPadOS public beta and the A16 iPad . . . the 6GB of RAM shows it limits quite quickly. Perhaps it is just my workflow (where data refreshes are frequent and painful/disruptive); perhaps it is just some further optimization that still needs to happen. Perhaps it is some of the new features (besides Apple Intelligent, which is not officially support) that I should probably turn off. My guess is that if you use one window at a time and use very well optimized apps, you will be fine. We have a crazy number of iPads in our house, and this is the only one of the current models that I've used with the current beta, and come away disappointed after using it for a couple days. The current mini has both a faster/more cable processor and GPU cores, and also 8GB RAM.

Well thank you. I tried the mini 7 and found it too similar to my 15 Pro. So it looks like I'm waiting for ipad 12.
