I have a JEYI TB3 enclosure, been using it with 1TB 970 EVO for years flawlessly and fast (~2600MB/s read and ~2200mb/s write).
I bought a 2TB 970 EVO Plus, phoenix controller, and it's slow af (900mb/s write).
I returned it and the guy there said they're getting a new batch (elpis).

I'm not sure i wanna bother with another return and all the **** again - it's already been a month.

I've seen test and i know for sure that 980 Pro works good, but obv because of thunderbolt and pcie3.0 it's gonna be nerfed.

Are there any bother benefits of running the 980 Pro via PCIe3.0/TB3, versus the 970 EVO Plus?
Random r/w? IOPS?

Don't get the 970 EVO Plus. It's a uniquely known problem SSD that didn't even work properly before a firmware update, and then has 50% write speed of what it should be getting (1200). It's such a known issue you can even see on amazon listings for thunderbolt nvme enclosures there will be a footnote that the 970 EVO Plus is either not fully supported or have proper write speed. I'm in the process of filing a warranty claim with Samsung.

Go with the 980 Pro.

Yeah skip the plus, but otherwise the 970 EVO is great. It's been a while since I shopped around for these things, but I seem to remember OWC's high-priced external units actually having the highest total real-world read/write speeds, but they were pretty low capacity. When they make a bus-powered 4tb that reads as fast as an internal SSD, I'll pay their price.
