Right now there is waiting list to get an iphone 4s on many carriers outright. They are available on 3 yr terms however. Can't you just sign up at the 3 yr term price at 159.99 and buyout of the contract the next day. (which i believe is $20/month to a max of $400 + tax).

The phone would cost:

$159.99 + 13%= $180.78

then

$400 +13% = $452

$180+$452= $632

So your getting the phone for a total of $632 instead of $649+tax for a 16GB model and your getting it NOW, not on a waiting list.

Would this work?

Would this work?

Maybe. Some here in the USA are trying this. The other issue to consider is that you will likely be liable for the first month's bill, e.g. carriers here require an account be active 30 or 60 days before you can cancel, unless you return the phone.

But it sounds like you're not as much interested in saving money as you are getting the phone sooner, so that may be OK for you.

Off contract does not mean unlocked, so you would still be bound to the carrier, just not under a contract for a specific length of time.
