...but I am surprised about OnyX, I thought it was just an app that ran normal system repair routines.

How can it cause problems?

Not at all. Onyx is a very powerful app that lets you do some things that can cause big problems. This is why I never recommend it to people who don't quite know what they're doing.

It also makes it possible to configure certain hidden parameters of Finder, Dock, Safari, to remove a certain number of files and folders that become cumbersome, preview the different logs and CrashReporter, and more...

Not cool in the wrong hands. :(

Well i speak to you from beyond the grave. I'm now here... back in Panther... just taking a look around seeing if my machine had a hardware or software fault.
At this moment in time i can't tell. I can now restart/shut down without holding down the power button. But one thing remains, something I didn't mention before because it was so minor. but the top right corner of the screen keeps locking up. Well its done it once in Panther and 3 times in Tiger. Just moving my mouse over all the buttons in the right of the menu bar just gives me the beachball. I can't click anything there.

I did a total clean instal of panther. I have EVERYTHING on my external HDD. Its quite daunting thinking that all my college, uni and personal work are all there. just sitting there. naked and exposed.

the plan now is to just look check out Panther for a bit longer, maybe a day or so just to see if it was a fault in my Tiger or my hardware. im sorta hoping it'll be hardware actually... wouldn't mind a new PowerBook :D or logic board or HDD!
oh yea I ran the Apple Hardware Test (Which i was so surprised at! i've been a PC user for a decade and something as quick, delicate and lightweight as that checking my system on boot up gave me a relaxed 'wow') and everything was fine.

Dude, your mac has some serious issues.

Back up your personal and college work to DVD as quick as possible. Never have just one copy of your life's work!

I would also advise using a different, known working computer to do the backing up. Doesn't matter if its a PC or Mac. See if you can copy the personal data onto the HD before burning the DVD, just to reduce the window of vunerablity.

I would be extremely reluctant to plug that external HDD into your mac with its current problems - There is a small but not neglible risk of trashing the HDD.

You can deal with loosing a computer - it isn't the end of the world. Loosing all your personal data is far harder to deal with.

Hope that helps

The machine waking from sleep and the fans going bonkers is actually a kernel panic. It happened a few times to my PowerMac and it was obscene to listen to (it was in my room while I was sleeping). The only way of recovering from that is a hard reboot but it could be causing preference issues due to NSUserDefaults not being able to write to disk before an application is quit.

Yea i just tried to install Tiger and i just got a Kernal Panic. infact each time I run it i get the same error. madness!

i do like the Kernal Panics. much better than the Blue Screen of Death. at least it says "hanging here now". which i thought was quite nice :)

im going to take my PowerBook to a tech guy at my uni. Hes a massive mac know-all so hopefully he can shed some light on this machine.

and RedTomato... im sending all my uber-important files to my PC downstairs now. better safe than sorry!

well here I am back on Tiger :) Turns out my DVD must be faulty. It wouldn't install, throwing up an error each time. Installed a friends Tiger instead (strange logic, desperate times) and ta daaa! I'm here on Tiger again. clean install. nothing on here at all. running the software updater as it slowly brings my machine up to speed again.

its all good! nice super fast super clean system. god i love a format :D
