When did this happen? My friend just bought a Macbook Pro and he somehow got apple care free with it? Is that even possible?

Technically that additional three years isn't AppleCare. AppleCare is the combination of three years of extended warranty and three years of phone support.

By this definition, when you buy a computer, it comes with one year of warranty, not one year of AppleCare.

US discount

If you access the US Apple Student site, Apple care is $183 for 13" MBP / MBA vs the $249 that it costs full retail... Not Free, but I'll take the $75 off :)

Yeah I know... but being a college kid doesn't come cheap lol. I've seen friends get lucky with employees who just go derp heres free apple care!
